No Longer Little: Parenting Tweens With Grace and Hope Review

Are you at the stage of parenting where you have a tween? If so I highly suggest reading a book written by Hal and Melanie Young called No Longer Little: Parenting with Grace and Hope and published by Great Waters Press. This book was written for parents of tweens ages 8 – 14 in mind. This book has come at a perfect time for review.

No Longer Little: Parenting with Grace and Hope is a book that is very encouraging and informational. We as parent know and can see the physical changes in our kids, but do we really know about the emotional, mental, and spiritual things these tweens go through. I know I try hard to remember growing up and how I was, but unfortunately I can’t remember a lot. We have talked about physical changes already. One thing we just started talking about was some of the emotional/mental changes. This book will help you what is going at some different stages, as well and learn to ways to help discipline things that need to change, how to help them get through schoolwork, and different strategies for dealing with emotional meltdowns.

I could relate to several of these chapters as I have already went through the tween years with my boys. In all honesty it was much easier then what I am going through now with my daughter. I also wish I could have read this when my boys were younger as I think it could have helped some things back then. I must say though that Chapter 3 Brains Turn To Mush I could really relate to with my son. He had a loss of interest in school work and finds a couple subjects really hard. What I enjoyed reading about what the ideas on how I could help him. I may not have had the tools back then but I do now. So it may not be to late to change the things I am doing. My daughter on the other hand has a love for school and is a sponge when it comes to learning.

When I started reading this Book I had my daughter in mind. My daughter is 10 and some of the things they talk about what to expect I am already seeing. I am dealing with the emotional side of it now. I have been saying I think it is getting to be that time for a while now. I didn’t realize how much earlier it actually started. The only problem I have is that my daughter has Aspergers. Some of the social things I am seeing are some of the things mentioned in this book. So it is really hard for me to tell if it is the age thing or if it is part of the Aspergers. I am starting to think it is a combination of both and wowsers….this is going to be a rocky ride!

My Thoughts:

I really enjoyed reading this book as it was down to earth and real. Hal and Melanie shared their experiences in a way that makes you connect as you are going through something similar. I found this book to be very encouraging and it made me feel that I am not alone in what I am going through or have gone through. I learned a lot and there is so much that I didn’t know of what to expect either. It opened my eyes a little more to things that I am seeing. They really teach you how to parent with Grace and encourage you with Hope that things DO get better. In all honesty they DO get better when they are already. I have a 23 year old and I have watched him grow into a wonderful young man. I do believe that raising girls is harder then boys during the tween years. At least that is my opinion.

Another thing I want to share that stands out to me is that at the end of the book is an index of different topics. I love the fact that I can go back and reference something later if I need to. In fact….I already have. So that is handy in itself!

Hal and Melanie have another book out for boys and young ages 14 – 20s called Love, Honor, and Virtue: Gaining or Regaining a Biblical Attidue Towards Sexuality. It teaches them how to walk with integrity. The world has been changing as things we talked about at 15 – 16 are talked about at an earlier age of about 10.
