Code For Teens: The Awesome Beginner’s Guide to Programming (Volume 1) – Review

Are you kids interested in coding, but you feel that you don’t have the experience to teach it? No worries as Code For Teens has you covered! Code For Teens: The Awesome Beginner’s Guide to Programming is for grades 6 and up. This is a Book that kids can learn how to program in Java independently. Java is the foundation in learning to code.

Did you know that software engineering is among the fastest growing careers? This book was written to teach teens how to code without any parent involvement.  Important concepts are introduced to the child gradually. As the child works through the exercises there is ample reviews, drills, and small challenges to ensure that your child understands the concepts before they move on. As you move through later chapters you routinely Review to ensure that the knowledge of what they are learning is retained. The book has 10 chapters and the child can move at their own pace through them.

My daughter is 10 and she is able to work through the chapters and understand what she is doing. My daughter spent almost 3 hours or more on a chapter. She took her time working through the book. There were times that I heard her giggle. The book has some humor in it written by the author and I think that is one of the things that make it fun for the kids. We went at a pace of a chapter a week. I wanted to take some pictures but my daughter has been in a stage lately where she absolutely does not want any pictures.

My daughter did move with ease through the book. There was a couple times that she stopped to ask me for help as the problem she was working on didn’t work out for her. I don’t want to call it problems….how about exercises. We spent about 20 minutes trying to figure it out so I had told her it was ok to move on to the next one as I am sure later in the book she will figure out where she went wrong. I couldn’t figure it out as she did exactly what was in the book.

Yes your student or child can work through this book at their own pace but you have to have some accountability as a parent. There is a way you can do that. Each chapter has a quiz. The child takes the quiz and either types their answers on the computer or writes them on paper. You grade the quiz by looking at the answers at the end of the book. You will then know if your child is understanding what they are reading and working on.

My favorite things about the book are that the child/student can work at their own pace. I also like that their is plenty of review through out the chapters so they aren’t forgetting what they are learning. I loved seeing the different challenges and a smile on her face when she completed them. The confidence this has given her to do learn this on her own is amazing. The book is well written with plenty of examples to work through. I also love the illustrations through out the book.

My daughter has really enjoyed this and I think eventually we will be doing the next volume which is on HTML.
