The Green Book – eGuide – Progeny Press Review

We are no strangers to the eGuides from Progeny Press, in fact they are one of my favorite literature guides to use with books. We recently had the chance to review The Green Book – eGuide. The eGuide is a pdf and you can print out the sheets or you can type your answer right in the pdf. This particular eGuide is for grades 3 – 5. The only thing I had to get was The Green Book by Jill Paton Walsh. I borrowed the book from the library.

The Green Book is a science fiction book. The story focuses on Pattie and her family, as they are the last group to leave a dying earth. They travel 4 years to a new distant planet called Shine. They could not take much with them on their trip but a change of clothes, a book and one item of belonging. They also were able to bring supplies but again those were limited as well. They had no idea if they would survive on this new planet or not. They didn’t have the gas to travel like others did. As you read you see they are in serious trouble. Patty and her sister decide to take a dangerous chance that may just save them all. I can’t really tell you how it ends or it would spoil it.

There is so much to love about The Green Book Eguide. First of all it is written from a Christian Perspective. It is 62 pages! It starts out with a synopsis, author biography and some Before- You-Read activities. Then as it moves on it goes by chapter. Each chapter contains vocabulary that is used in the book. You will also find in each chapter literary techniques, such as In-context, similes, idioms, foreshadowing, repetition, alliteration, juxtaposition, conflict, theme, and circular narrative. There is also moral lessons and character values. This teaches team work, making plans, work rules, personal value, and more. There are reading comprehension questions that are through out each chapter. You also go into deeper thinking as well. At the end of each chapter you will find activities and writing assignments. At the end you will find suggestions for further reading.

Take a look at a sample of The Green Book eGuide for yourself.

How We Used This:

My daughter and I read a chapter a day. My daughter was hooked into the book at the first chapter. Each chapter left you wondering what was going to happen next. It was hard to not want to read ahead for the next day. One of the things that my daughter enjoyed was that Pattie recorded the journey and the new life in her green book that she brought with. At first people wondered why she was not done reading her book, and then they noticed it was blank. It actually really was a good idea for her to bring a journal with so she had a way to record things. You could see what was happening through her eyes.

There really isn’t anything I didn’t like about this eGuide. In fact I was really thrilled that you have the option to type your answers instead of writing them. That really saves on printing for us and I can save the answers right in the pdf. I really like that each chapter had some sort of activity or writing assignment. There were actual hands on activities to do, as well as reference websites and videos. So you could really extend your learning while you were reading. I think that is one of things that made it more exciting for my daughter. She really enjoyed the book but it also gave her more then just answer questions and vocabulary.
