Math Refresher for Adults – Review

I have noticed while homeschooling the kids that I have forgotten how to do some of the Math. I guess the saying is true, if you don’t use it you lose it. I was really excited to review the book Math Refresher for Adults by Math Essentials. I want to be able to teach them math and understand it and in order to do that I need to make I know how to solve the problems.

Math Refresher for Adults has 9 different main sections: Whole Numbers, Fractions, Decimals, Percents, Geometry, Intergers, Charts and Graphs, Word Problems, and Pre-Algebra and Algebra. Each page starts out with Review Exercises and provides helpful hints. Then you move into a couple sample problems and you have some problems to work on and at the end is a problem solving questions, you could just call this a word problem. The lessons are short and not overwhelming at all. If your stuck and you really don’t understand what you are doing you can access the website to watch the videos that go with the section you are working on. You don’t have to watch them but they are handy if you need them. You can start anywhere you want in the book. You don’t have to do things in order. I find that to be handy if there is something you want to work on you just go to those pages. You can check your answers in the back of the book.

How I Used This:

I had to decided to use this for myself for a refresher. I have noticed with homeschooling the kids that my math skills seem a little rusty. I feel that if I can understand the problems then I can help explain to them if and when they get stuck in math. I have totally forgotten how to do fractions and percents. My daughter is starting to get into fractions so this will be very beneficial to me as well. I have been working at a pace of a page a day. That way I don’t feel so overwhelmed if I get stuck or don’t remember. I haven’t had to use the videos as of yet but I know that as I work through the book I will.

I started at the beginning of the book in whole numbers. In whole numbers you work through addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. For me this chapter has been a breeze as it is pretty basic math and stuff that I still use every day. It was actually great review for me just to practice. I had started writing in the book for the problems that I could do right in the book. Then I would have a piece of scrap paper next to me and I would jot the problems down and solve them on paper. I would show you my scrap paper but it is rather messy as I just find any open space and use it. I have always done that and maybe it is a terrible habit, but it is how I roll. I would suggest though if your copying problems to use lined paper so you can line them up neatly and and have your problems in order.

The chapter I am currently working on is Fractions. It starts out with identifying pictures and gets harder. You will eventually get into reducing fractions, improper fractions, adding, subtracting, and reciprocals. I have to admit I am pretty rusty with fractions. I get the basic fractions but forgot how to do the rest.

I like the fact that each page builds off the other. When you start you are reviewing and then you move onto something new. I find the hints to be helpful. Although I am not sure as I move on if that will be enough for me and that is where the videos will come in handy. I think this book is definitely handy and is a great math refresher. I don’t think it is overwhelming at all. Remember you can go at your own pace.
