The Master and His Apprentices: Art History from a Christian Perspective – Review

One of my favorite thing to teach the kids is Art History, there are so many beautiful paintings as well as history. We recently had the change to review The Master and His Apprentices: Art History from a Christian Perspective. The Master and His Apprentices are for a High School and Adult level and upon completion would can as 1 credit. For this review I received digital copies of the Textbook and the Teacher Guide.

The Master and His Apprentices are written from a Christian perspective and contain no nudity or other objectionable material. This course was designed by a homeschool graduate. The book starts out about creation and really puts focus on God being the first creator. This book covers all the major art periods as well. Chapters are divided by time periods: Ancient Cultures, Classical Antiquity, Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque and Beyond. You do get a very good and clear picture of the connections between Art, History, and the Bible.

The Teachers Guide is set up fantastically. It lays out a time line of what needs to be completed for you. That is something I really liked about that. It contains Weekly Worksheets/Discussions, 4 Exams, Grading Chart, Answer Key and more.

How We Used This:

I used this with my son four times a week. We had to go at a slower pace so he could take in all the information as some of it was a little above his head. The only reason I say that is because he has cognitive delays. So we took our time to get the most out of it. We would do a little extra research as well as a lot more discussion. You had to read the assignment first and then you came back to discuss what you have read. The questions that did come along with it we answered out loud because he does have issues with writing. The papers that he will have to write I will come up with something closer to his level of understanding to be done.

One of the things that I really enjoyed about this curriculum was the fact that I didn’t have to be an art teacher to teach this. The topics are well explained and in great detail. I think so far one of my favorite parts was on creation. The way they had explained creation in an art was just really admiring and made you appreciate things all that much more. The images through out this book really reflect on God’s creative touch.

You can pick and choose what you want to learn about as well. There really is no wrong way to use this curriculum. We started at the beginning and plan to work are way through the whole book. It’s tempting though to want to jump to different periods at times. I love art and I love history! I want to soak up so much!

Another thing that I really liked was the timelines. There are important world events on them, Famous Art, and Biblical Events. It really comes in handy as well. In the back of the book you can find pieces by location. It comes in handy if you travel and want to see the pieces. It also comes in handy to just be able to look them up and make your own virtual field trip as well.

I do plan to add in some of our own art work as well. Trying the techniques that may have been in those time periods. It has been a little more busier then I have wanted it to be so I hadn’t added them in yet. I think it would make a great addition and make this a lot more fun.

Bottom line is if your looking for anything hands on you will not find it in this book. That is ok because there is a LOT to take away from this book and you can simply add in where and when you want it. It is basically book work. The one thing I can honestly say is that the pictures are so vividly done that it keeps you engaged.
