Hake/Saxon Grammar and Writing 3 – Review

I have such a hard time finding a Grammar and writing curriculum for my son to understand. I recently had the chance to review Hake/Saxon Grammar and Writing 3 by Hake Publishing with my son. I received a Grammar And Writing 3 Writing Book, Consumable Textbook, and Teacher Guide for this review. This is particular set is a third grade level.

Grammar and Writing is a comprehensive curriculum that focuses on writing, vocabulary development, spelling, and grammar. I know I am reviewing the third grade level but I want to mention that ALL levels of grammar and writing develop the basics concepts of grammar: eight parts of speech, sentence structure, sentence diagramming, capitalization, punctuation, and correct word usage.

Each lesson is set up with opening our grammar books to each lesson. We look it over before we start. Then we have what is called a grammar meeting. The grammar meeting is a discussion that asked a question. It creates a discussion. It can be long or short depending on how long you and the student make it. Then it moves into Speaking and Listening. This portion encourages students to participate. Then we move into vocabulary. You learn a latin root and definition of a word and it is used in sentences. Then we proceed on to the Lesson and work on the review.

One thing the Teachers Book states is that you must do all the lessons in order and not skip around. The reasoning is you want the students to learn and remember the skills and concepts. They way the Teachers book is set up is it walks you through a daily routine, which I mentioned above. On test days we include the Writing Workbook. The Writing Workbook isn’t something you use daily. You use the Consumable Textbook Daily with your Student. In the back of the Teachers book there are extra practice worksheets that you can hand out to use if your student should need more practice.

How We Used This :

I used this with my son 4 days a week. Fridays are reserved for field trips and catch up. The lessons ran us anywhere from 20 – 45 minutes depending on how my son had understood the concept. There were some days that he wasn’t really into conversations and there were others days he was full of conversation. The one thing I can honestly say is that when we did our first lesson in the writing workbook, I really saw improvement. The sentences were complete and not fragmented. Normally he is writing in fragmented sentences. He has a hard time remembering punctuation and forgets to use capital letters. At this point, I am just thrilled to see complete sentences as that is something we have been striving for.

I really like how the teachers book is laid out for you for the whole course of the year. It makes things a whole lot easier for me and lesson planning. It also is a great guide for me to teach him as well. I really liked that there was extra practice worksheets in the back of the teachers book. Sometimes just the review and the lesson wasn’t enough. I like the fact that in the review it brings of things you learned previously so that it stays fresh in the students mind.

In the Consumable Textbook I like that it also shows the Grammar Meeting as well as the vocabulary and it isn’t just me teaching it from the Teachers Book. I like the fact that it gives the definitions and shows examples. I love how each lesson builds off the previous lesson.

It really has been hard to find something that clicks with my son. I wasn’t sure about it before the review as we really struggle to find something. I can’t say he enjoyed it because grammar and writing is NOT his favorite subject. The main point is he is doing it and is maintaining it, for him that is HUGE!!
