Critical Thinking Detective Book 1 – Review

One of my favorite supplemental curriculums to use with the kids is from The Critical Thinking Co., as they have many different items that teach critical thinking skills to children. I was really excited to see that this was an option to review. We received Critical Thinking Detective Book 1 for our review. I was originally going to use it with my son as those are skills I want to work on, but decided to use it with my daughter. I had no idea she was going to like it as much as she did.

The Critical Thinking Detective Book 1 is a colorful 32 page book that offers up a fun approach to using detective skills. This is great for kids in grades 4 – 12. How the kids use their detective skills is by reading a passage and analyze information in guiding them to solve the case. So they read the short passage and then there is a line up and there is a little blurb under each person as well. On the next page you have the suspects. You write each name by the suspect and why you are ruling them out. Then the last writing is the suspect and why. So they are taught to evaluate the evidence of each case to make a decision on how to solve the case. It requires that you use complete sentences and sentence numbers to describe the best evidence for their conclusion.

How We Used This:

For the majority of this review we used this four days a week. I didn’t even have to fight with my daughter to do this. She was happily willing and excited. She was very engaged in this book. She got it right each time. It gave her confidence and really lifted her spirits. There was a couple that she wasn’t sure about, but she had figured it out correctly. What makes my heart happy is that she wants MORE! We have been working on putting our schedule together for next year and she has requested to keep doing this. Now I have to look and see our options on what to do next. I was totally not expecting this high of an interest.

Each day my daughter did one case. She spent roughly 20 – 30 minutes working on this. She did not use page numbers. I mentioned to her several times but I think the excitement of doing it she forgot. At first she wasn’t using complete sentences, but she got better as we were working through the book.  After she was done I would check the back of the book to see if she had the final suspect correct or not and why to see if she figured it out right. She had every one of them right so far. We still have a couple cases left as summer is a little busy for us. We will finish them early next week. Again I am so happy that this was something that she liked to do. It wasn’t a chore for her. I love that she was very engaged in each case as well. This definitely made learning fun for her.

This was not a full curriculum this was something that was supplemental. I did notice on the website that they do have full curriculum. We definitely will be getting the second book. I am also interested in the Writing Detective as well. I think we will be on our way to some extra fun learning this year!
