New American Cursive 2 (Famous Americans) – Review

One of things that I want to teach both of the kids is cursive, as I think that is very important skill for them to have. I was really excited when I saw there was a review for Memoria Press. For this review we received the New American Cursive 2 (Famous Americans) workbook. They have different workbooks for their New American Cursive series  that I high suggest checking out.

The New American Cursive is a penmanship program that is easy to follow for teaching cursive. The workbook is set up to present simplified letter forms, using multi-sensory methods to aid in learning of motor skills necessary to write well. I was rather impressed with some of the methods. My favorite was set the mood for the penmanship exercises by adding light classical music. My daughter absolutely loves classical music so this was a great addition to when she practiced her writing. I don’t want to give out all the methods as I don’t think that would be fair to spoil it. I like that it gives you teaching tips so you can enhance your childs writing skills.

This book stands out from other cursive programs. They work on a couple letters at a time on one page and when you turn the page over they are practicing writing words. I really like that as they are getting extra practice and it isn’t just writing letters. What stands out is that there are journal pages. It gives the kids a chance to be creative and write. As you get farther there are different things they are writing. They are copying quotes. I also like that there are a few different learning exercises too. For example: writing a Thank-You note, writing your address, and many other journal exercises.

How We Used This:

I used this with my daughter roughly 4 days per week. I had her do a lesson a day. A lesson a day for her was working on the letters and the words. Now she is working on writing smaller and spacing. She still struggles with writing, but I do believe that practice makes perfect. In the book they suggest 20 minutes a day. In all honesty it did take her close to this to complete as she really put her focus in it.

I liked that this was different from the others I really like the journal pages that are in it. The first couple my daughter printed. I had to remind her that she needed to be using cursive. Her problem is that she forgets the letter. So we may have to practice the letters a little more so that she remembers them. She needs to learn to write smaller and stay in the lines better. That hasn’t been an easy thing for her. This is work in progress. I do not think that this is overwhelming for the kids at all. In fact I think the journal pages add a little fun and it is a nice break from practicing the letters. Again I love the fact that there are words they are writing and not just letters. So they are working on more then just the letters they are working on that day.
