Homeschool Week In Review – Started Summer Schedule

Are you homeschooling all year round or do you take a break in the summer? We homeschool all year round. I started our Summer schedule a week early. So far it is working out perfect. It still has some kinks but they will be worked out very soon. Do you find time in the day to take time for yourself? On Monday I started taking time for myself each morning. I really enjoy the peaceful quiet! I have been waking up and getting ready to start my day. I went for a walk each morning. My goal is 5 days a week and if we walk on the weekend it is a bonus. I am not only getting exercise but the quiet me time is something I really need each morning. It starts my day off in a much better mood.

Your probably wondering what is our Summer Schedule. Well for my daughter we need to finish out her year on Math and I think we will finish by the second week of July. I have reserved the summer for just the curriculum we are reviewing. Now if the kids don’t have something to fill there day then I will add in writing/reading and math. I will also be squeezing in some STEM this summer as well. I want to be able to enjoy some of the library programs at the different libraries and the field trips that are cranking out for the summer. We also like to explore the nature preserves and the State Parks.

This week my son started a new review for Grammar/Writing with Hake Publishing. So far I am really liking it a lot! My son on the other hand….it’s not his most favorite subject. My son has also been working on his Q the Robot kit. I think we are almost half way through it. We did get it to light up and we did get the motors to to work so far.  We had one of the pieces fly off the board and we can’t find it, so we are waiting on a replacement piece. It fell somewhere on my desk and we just can’t find it. I did hear it land somewhere. That has been really interesting for us. It has challenged his fine motor as well as some of the pieces are small. I did have to chuckle as we learned about the battery pack he got a little worried about messing up and frying it out. So he has me do that part for now. We did start an art history program that seems to be very interesting so far. It is a Christian based one. A review will come out later for that. We also just finished up working on a Labor Day Unit study. Again that is another review and I can’t wait to share it with you. I learned a lot of things that I didn’t even know behind Labor Day. I knew it was a day to celebrate the American Worker but I never really knew what lead up to it.

My daughter has been enjoying her Critical Thinking Detective Book 1. That is another review coming up soon. She gets so excited solving the problems! She has been working hard in her math. The one thing I noticed that she has been struggling with is fractions. So I will be making some printables to share for fractions here. I am hoping to get to that either later today or tomorrow. She has been working very hard practicing her cursive. I did catch her printing in her cursive book. So I had to give her a gentle reminder that she needed to use her cursive. I think she still forgets what some of the letters are. Her favorite thing has been doing the art lessons each day for an upcoming review. She has been using water colors. I love how she puts so much effort into each of her projects. It’s one thing I don’t really have to fight with her to do. The only argument is she wants to go her own way and not follow the directions. Sometimes that can be a battle.

This week we did meet with the psychologist. We weren’t suppose to get in until the end of June. I am a little confused and I am not sure if I agree or disagree. He said that if my son can beat the video games and is good at them, teach himself guitar (which means he has patience), and can read Edgar Allan Poe (which he has to understand some of it to keep reading it) then all I need to do is find out the in as to his way of learning. He suggested using video games as a reward, although I already do that. He can’t play them until he is finished with his school work. He also told me to do things in shorter chunks so he can understand. I do think there is a learning disability somewhere and it isn’t just his cognitive delay. I know that some of it is his age. I remember being his age. I think I might still go ahead and get the educational eval done.

We did go to the library this week for an educational escape room event. It was us an another family. It took us the first 10 minutes to find a clue. There were two boxes that you had to unlock and you had to find the clues. The girls found a tangram of the country of China. We had to figure out what country it was. Then we had to use characters from a book as a password. We had to figure out the directions of the flights to different countries to open the box. We had to find other clues and a key. It took the girls 25 minutes and we solved it. You were only given 30 minutes to solve it. They have two more over the summer and my daughter wants to do them both. One is a Star Wars Theme and the other is a Musical. Our library is planning to do things each  month with the homeschoolers here. I think that is awesome! Glad to see they are thinking of us as well.

Later that day we had some friends come up and visit us. It was 80 else where but 50 here. We met at the beach. The kids had a blast. My daughter enjoyed looking for rocks, fossils and coral. I can’t believe she got as wet as she did as the water was cold and it was cold. It was great just watching her be a kid and have fun. It was a battle I didn’t fight. They attempted to build a sand castle or dig a hole, but my daughter was to fascinated finding rocks. We spent two hours at the beach. We also ran into other homeschool friends. Ones we didn’t know were coming to venture our way.

I am excited to say that our library is having some fun programs this summer. One of the things that they are offering is guitar lessons once a week. It is acoustic guitar lessons. They are free too. So through the end of August we will be doing that. I think we signed up for a slime event as well. We shall see what the other libraries are offering through out the summer. I think we will have a blast.

To finish off the weekend, we took a drive to my happy place. It is one of my favorite places to go. It is the pier in Manitowoc. I love the preserve they made for the birds. The pelicans are here. I can’t believe just how many there are. We also noticed carp spawning along the edges of the lagoon that was made for these birds. There were little schools of fish near the rocks too. The sea gulls were having a hay day catching them. I think they are spawning as well and that is why they are close to the shore line. It was beautiful out with the sun. The only thing I didn’t like was the humidity. I was surprised to see a lot of people out that early in the morning. Well I suppose it wasn’t really early in the morning. The beach is quiet here in the morning and there is that many people on the boardwalk. We are having a grill out today with our friends.

Hope you all have a great Memorial Day Weekend! Thanks to those who have served and are serving!
