CodeWizards HQ Review

Do your children have an interest in coding? My Daughter at first wasn’t sure if she would be interested. I had the opportunity to sign her up for a one hour Class with CodeWizards HQ. CodeWizardsHQ offer live classes in computer programming for students in grades 5 – 10. These are 12 week courses. They have different levels hand different coding classes. Please keep in mind these classes were designed for every student, not just homeschool. If you have a homeschool group that is interested you have the ability to chose your class date and time vs having a set date and time already picked out.

I mentioned that the classes were 12 weeks long, and they are weekly one hour classes. You have 24/7 access to the coding platform. You get same day email support. We didn’t have to use the email support as we only had one class. All questions were answered that day. You can get free extra one on one help. I think sometimes kids need that little extra one on one, I think that is a great perk. The classes are recorded so you can go back and listen to them again if needed. There is an online student community, unlimited personal webspace, and certificate of completion.

CodeWizardsHQ is different then most places to teach coding as your in a small class with a LIVE teacher. We had the chance to attend a one hour HTML Class. The kids did an online comic book in HTML. My daughter never had experience with it before the class. I have to admit I was a little concerned that she would be the child asking a TON of questions. I totally underestimated my daughter. I honestly thought she would be the child that was always asking questions. Now I don’t know that there was because I didn’t hear the class. I just sat in the room with her for a bit. The kids could talk freely through their mics. He didn’t have them on mute and I observed it to be very interactive. The class is really hands on as your learning and doing it as you go. One thing I want to make note of is that the class sizes are small. That in itself is a good thing as you have kids that can interact as well as keep control over a class. I know that with other classmates my daughter didn’t feel alone in the class as I am sure that other kids had questions as they worked through it too.

I found the class to be beginner friendly. The reason I say that is my daughter had no experience with HTML going in and was able to do thing in HTML she has never done before. I also know that I mentioned that we only took a one hour class, but the regular weekly classes are structured. If your child has had previous experience in any of the classes their is advanced placement in their program. So that is something to really consider. There are different levels to this program. You can see them in the picture above. If your child is interested in coding there is a facebook group to ask questions and find out more information.

I am going to give you a little peak in to the HTML. I had asked if I could share with you a glimpse of what they were doing. Here is a link to my daughters comic that she created in the class. Above in the picture you can see the HTML that she was using. The front end of the project is the the link to her completed project. The picture above is considered the back end and the work that she did.  So this kind of gives you a visual of what my daughter had done in the class.

The classes was about one hour and fifteen minutes long. The only interaction I had with the class was when my daughter had an issue loading the webpage she needed to work in. We kept getting a blank page. The problem was solved quickly with the help of the teacher and we were up and running. My daughter was very soft spoken when talking. I think she was a little nervous. I stepped out of the room to give her the privacy she needed to focus on the class. Now I admit I was wondering how the class was going and if she was understanding things. She ran and got me when she was finished and showed me her work. She was very proud of what she completed. I did peak my head in to see how she was doing and to me she work hard and her attention was very engaged.

Now here is the thing that melts my heart!! Once she was logged off the course. The first thing out of her mouth was “I am interested”. I can’t tell you how excited I was to hear that she really enjoyed the course enough to want to learn more. She was so proud that she was able to complete the project. I really do think that the LIVE class and the hands on learning was the best way for her to learn. I think being able to get help in that moment also helped her achieve her final goal of project completion. So that leaves me very impressed with the glimpse we had into these programs.
