Books That Come Alive!!

My daughter really loves to read and she loves to learn! I noticed that she really enjoys being able to explore interactive books. We had the chance to review three media enhanced books from Weigl Publishers: Glaciers, A Lion’s World, and There Once Was a Cowpoke Who Swallowed an Ant. The books are meant for children in grades K – 2. My daughter is in 4th grade and she really enjoyed these books. Each of these books have a digital code that unlocks multimedia content including audio, videos, weblink, slide shows, and activities.

Glaciers is from the series “Earth’s Water” and is intended for children in grades 3 – 6. This actually was one of my favorites as I found it to be very fascinating. You are able to explore the many forms that water takes. At the end this one had an experiment to give you an idea of the rising sea levels. I didn’t realize just how many glaciers were out there and how much water would make the sea level rise if they all melted. Once you are done with the story there is a quiz on what you have learned. In this book you get a bigger idea of what glaciers are all about. From how they are formed, to how they move, where they are located, the behavior of them when they are calving. Calving is when pieces break off the shelf. It’s beautiful and scary all at the same time. The first video really had me interested it was about the calving. It was pretty intense to watch. There was some maps on where the glaciers were and what they looked like. One thing that I really liked was that it had a couple interactive worksheets. You could type in the answers or you could print them out. I printed them out. I loved the fact that it tested your comprehension. There was one for you to research as well. My opinion would be that this would make a great addition if you were studying glaciers or water, as something to add in and use. The interactive worksheets I thought were a great bonus for that. I forgot to mention you could have the book read to you, but we tried it and didn’t really care for the monotone computer sound voice. It is a good thing for those who follow better with audio.

A Lion’s World is a book about lions and is from the series called “Eye Discover”. It is a pretty easy book to read. The pictures in this books are gorgeous and captivating. When you use the online code and have the story read to you, the voice is of a female and while she is reading it is live video clip that you are watching. It actually really brings the book to life. You can also choose to read the book online as well. The pictures int he book are just fantastic. The book is about lions and what they are, what they do, and how they act. It doesn’t go into great detail but it is short and sweet especially for the children it is intended for, which is grades K – 2. My daughter loves animals so her being able to watch the video clip as the story was being read, she was really fascinated!

There Once Was a Cowpoke Who Swallowed an Ant is a fiction book for children in grades K – 2. We founds this to be a silly book that made us laugh. The cowpoke has swallowed an ant that was stinging his stomach. He tried really hard to eat things that would eat the ant, but each time he ate something he had more problems. Until the very end when he says that he had to fix the issue himself. I can’t really tell you what happens next or it will spoil the story. The code that  you enter takes you gives you the choice of reading the book to you or you reading it yourself. We choose the read it to you option. The story is read by a female and there are parts you hear from the Cowpoke himself. I love the way it was narrated. The pictures in the book really fit the story well. It was engaging because you really wanted to know what happened next. One thing I want to mention is that as it reads to you the words are highlight that are read. I find that nice because it is easy to follow a long and it keeps your place for you in case you want to engage in the pictures some more.

We really did enjoy all three of these books. I can see us reading them again and again. My daughters favorite was A Lion’s World and I think my favorite was the Glaciers. I love learning new things and there were many things that I didn’t really know that I thought I did.
