Heroes Of History Orville Wright The Flyer – Review

My son and I need to stir things up sometimes and get away from the regular Book work. One way we do this is either watch or read documentaries. We also love to dive a little deeper and turn things into unit studies.  We recently had the chance to review Heroes of History Orville Wright The Flyer by YWAM Publishing. We also received the Unit Study Curriculum Guide for this review as well. This book is for ages 10 and older.

Heroes of History Orville Wright The Flyer was an amazing book. In fact I learned a lot about Orville and Wilbur Wright. The two men loved to tinker with things. I noticed that when they finished one project they wanted to work on something else. The boys were curious about flight since they were little. It all started with a toy helicopter. People thought there would never be flight. Orville and Wilbur Wright proved that theory wrong. In fact these two men made the way for aviation today! It was really interesting at how these two kept things so hush hush as they were building the different heavier then air machines. They got together with some famous people. I am surprised that things didn’t leak well before their first successful flight. They were determined to figure out flight. They kept on trying and they kept recalculating. They were awarded a military contract for the planes. They ended up having a patent on their designs. They participated in air shows. I was just so amazed at how much they really did accomplish. I had no idea that there was monuments as well. I also had no idea that someone tried to steal their thunder by cheating and saying that Langley was the first person to fly. That was proved wrong later. I also found myself fascinated with all the world records they set and broke. They were impressive men.

We did read the whole book. We read a chapter a day and we used the study guide, which had comprehension questions and some critical thinking questions as discussion each day. We did one chapter because the book was very technical in its talk about the parts of the airplane. I didn’t want to overwhelm my son with all the technical terms. The book is also very fascinating seeing these boys grow up. You learn that a printing press and newspaper was designed, then a bicycle shop, flight, and then at the end Orville wanted to design better oxygen tent. There was no keeping them down they were just so determined. They really did change the course of history with flight.

We are not finished with the unit study curriculum guide. We are still currently working on it. I love the fact that there is so much in it. You have key notes which are quotes. I plan to use them as copy work for my son. You can create a display corner. What we did for the display corner was make a poster board of the different models of airplanes that the Wright Brothers had made. We also wrote some things about them on the poster board. We also have one of the monuments that is on Kill Devil Hill on that poster board. There is a student exploration with creative writing, hands on projects, and audio and visual projects. You will also find community links, social studies, related themes to explore, and cumulating events. In the appendix you can find books and resources, answers to chapter questions, and social study reproducibles.

One extra thing we did was visit the EAA Museum. I could never get tired of going there to see how much flight has changed over time. There are some hands on exhibits and they also have an area for kids to explore and have fun. We have yet to see the outside hangers yet, but we will do that sometime this summer. My favorite exhibit is the Wright Brothers Glider. I don’t remember what year the replica is from. It reminds each and every time how flight began.

We really enjoyed reading the book and we will continue to work on the unit study curriculum guide to further explore. We did take our time reading the book and going through the questions. It gave us more discussion of things to talk about. We took some notes of the things we wanted to look into further as well. The next book I would like to read is Heroes of History Milton Hershey. Milton Hershey was a giving man and another one who never gave up.
