Help Teaching Pro – Review

There are times that I may struggle to come up with a Lesson plan for a subject we are working  on, or I even just run out of time searching for things. There are also times I find that my kids need some extra help on stuff that they are struggling with. HelpTeaching.com has saved the day with some of the lessons and worksheets they have on their site. For this review I received a one year online subscription to Help Teaching Pro.

HelpTeaching.com has a wide assortment of worksheets and lesson plans for every subject and every grade level. The grades are preK – 12. So yes you can find stuff here for middle and high school.  I know worksheets for the older grades are hard to find. The perk with this is that for many different subjects you can find lessons that are already created. You can also create your own tests and quizzes. You can assign your child lessons to do online or print them for offline. You can also find math worksheet and game generators.

How We Used This:

My son is at a transition stage. We are working on preparing him for life after high school. I spent a lot of time in the Life Skills area. For two weeks I had focused on  Job Search. Some of the topics in the job search, such as Resume and Cover Letters and Filling Out A Job Application was more review to my son. My son takes a Job Exploration class every week so I just wanted to review the topics they had already covered. That way I get to make sure he is truly understanding it. We spent a couple days on Interview Questions. I printed out the handout and we did mock interviews. We practiced this several times as I wanted him to understand some of the questions they may have for him and I wanted him to be ready to answer them. The other worksheet we used was learning about a job. He has to figure out what kind of job he would be interested in and know details about how to get to that position. So that was a really good reference for us to use. One of the harder worksheets that took us some time was Determining Your Skills and Talents. Places of employment will want to know what you think are your strength and weaknesses so this was another really great one for us to use. Some of the other Life Skills I turned those worksheets into a web quest where I had him search for the correct answers. That way he was still learning about different skills.

I also used a couple online lessons with the kids to fill in some of the gaps with the lesson planning. I didn’t assign them to it. If your wondering what assigning means it means that you invite the child to use it via email. Students will then have to provide their name in order for the link to work. Once completed you can see a report. We didn’t use that feature as I was right their with them when they were using the worksheets or doing the lessons. I like using the lessons because it is more self directed learning and I don’t have to sit and teach it all. For example my daughter watched a short video about the oceans and took a quiz. There was also a ocean vocabulary worksheet to go along with it but I didn’t use that. There was another study I really liked and it was on Anne Frank. I used that with my son.

I was thrilled to have found a plant and animal cell worksheet to print. My daughter is currently working on biology and I printed it. She had to color and I liked that it already had picked out colors for her to use to color in. It was a great resource to reinforce the learning of the plant and animal cells. She had a lot of fun with it as well.

I did spend time using the quiz maker. I made a few multiple choice quizzes to use for my son to use with the readings we had for science. We have been working on ocean and the quiz he originally has was a fill in the blank. I was able to turn it into multiple choice. You can also create fill in the blank. As you create the quiz you enter the answers so you have an Answer Key. I didn’t save my worksheets. I had deleted them after I printed them. I wish I could have made the quizzes just a few questions longer.

I would have liked to see some lessons on Life Skills. Yes there are many different categories in the Life Skills section but these are mostly worksheets that reinforce what was just taught. I would like to see some laid out ones. I don’t always have the time to focus on them. Also with some of the worksheets in different categories it would have been nice to have some reading to go along with the worksheets to be able to answer some of the questions.
