Art History Class – Hieroglyphics

This week for art History we learned about Hieroglyphics. We didn’t really spend to much time on it as this is a repeated subject for us, as we have studied Ancient Egypt. Did you know that hiero is a greek word and means holy and glyphic means writings. So the word itself means holy writings. The Egyptians believed that there was great power in a name. That meant if someone was remembered then they would survive the afterlife.

I found it kinda of fascinating that the hieroglyphics themselves weren’t really meant for words but for sounds. The pictures were symbols that represented objects. Painters, scribes, and carvers were the ones who had the skills for the hieroglyphics. They could make you see and understand things that weren’t right in front of you. The more impressive the images and words, the stronger the message was.  There was an area of land between the Tigris and Euphrates, where picture-writing (hieroglyphics) gradually changed into writing made up of lines and marks. The signs no longer looked much like what the things stood for. However, the area outside of that stuck to the hieroglyphics.

Art Project:

What I did was use the chart of symbols on the first link I shared under resources for further study. I had the kids write their names. If I would have thought about this a little further, we could have made our own paper and pretended it was papyrus and then wrote on that. Another idea is I could have crumpled a paper bag and had them write on that to give it a textured look. I also should have used them use tones of colors back in that era.

The next couple weeks we are still in the Ancient Egyptian period and I will have different projects for each.
