Introduce Your Child to Culture with Books from Carole P. Roman

One of the things I have always been fascinated with was learning about other culture. Learning about names, history, way of life, holiday, and favorite foods is very interesting. I think it is important for children to learn about culture as well. It gives them a sense of awareness and respect to others. You can introduce your children to culture with Carole P. Romans books and collections. Carole P. Roman has many books geared from ages 3 – 12. My Daughter and I were excited to review If You Were Me and Live In…China, If You Were Me and Lived In…Italy, and If You Were Me and Lived on…Mars.

If You Were Me and Live on…Mars starts out how you would be living many years in the future and once you move there you would call yourself a Martian. It kind of got us thinking about what life on Mars would really be like. Right at the beginning is start conversation with my daughter. We talked about how there is no life on mars and how NASA has a robot there to study the planet and report back with facts and findings. My daughter gave me a look when she read that it would take 6 months to travel by rocket ship to mars. She said she would probably kiss the ground when we landed because she would miss being outside and exploring, and playing with friends. As you go in the book you learn that Mars is a very severe environment to live on. You would be living way differently then you would hear on earth. It talked about weather, climate, how mars orbits the sun, and much more. We really enjoyed this as it gave us a lot to think about.

If you interested in learning about Italy I recommend reading If You Were Me and Lived in…Italy. The book starts out telling you about where is Italy located. My daughter chuckled a little when I said that Italy had a boot shape to when you looked at it on the map. Did you know that the Roman Empire stretched over 48 day modern countries? We knew it was big but we didn’t think that big. You will learn a little bit of history behind the capital of Italy, which is Rome. Next you learn about common boy and girl names and how to address your mom and dad.You also learn a little bit about food. One of the things I did after we read this book was have my daughter try gelato. If you have never tried gelato you really must. It has way more flavor than ice cream and it is more creamy. My daughter and I talked about one of the historical sites as it was a really big deal in history and is a very popular place to see today. The rest of the book talks about the favorite sport, holidays, and a couple other small things.

If your interested in learning China, I recommend reading If You Were Me and Lived in…China. It starts out talking about the geography and climate of China and then goes into the capital Beijing. One thing about China is it has a lot of interesting history. Names are picked with meanings, which we found to be very interesting. Next you learn about the different areas and the types of food that are eaten. You will learn about sports and about Chinese New Year.

My Overall Thoughts:

Carole P. Roman writes amazing books for children and they are really nicely illustrated as well. I love using them with my daughter because one she is learning about something and two it really gives us more discussion to talk about. For us we have been able to build off these books and look further into things. Each book talks about the money that is used. We look up to see what the value of each is compared to the dollar. We have added in things such as recipes, videos, and further researching. These books are great additions for supplements in your homeschool.

One of the next books we would like to read is If You Were Me and Lived In The American West. We will be studying this a little more in the near future and it is a book I want to add to our studies.  It gives you a snap shot of what things were like back in those days. For example: what did the kids do, the clothes you wore, and the things you ate. For us it seems like it would go into detail that we may not learn about in our history books. I really like that it gives you a visual of that time period.

One of my daughters all time favorite books is Oh Susannah: It’s in the Bag. It’s about a young girl having a bad day. Instead of dealing with problems she just filed them away in her back pack. How much can one back pack take? The book sets an example that you should talk about your problems and not just bury them away. When you talk about things then things can change. It was a book that my daughter couldn’t put down.
