Fairy Mom and Me Book Review and Giveaway

Do you remember being younger and wishing you could just change things with a little pixie dust? Oh wait, I am an adult and I do wish that at times. Would make life a little easier being able to wave a magic wand. We recently had the chance to review FAIRY MOM AND ME by Sophie Kinsella. Are you ready to explore the adventures of a mother-daughter fairy duo?

Fairy Mom and Me is geared for readers ages 7 – 10. It was written by New York Times bestselling author Sophie Kinsella, and illustrated by Marta Kissa. In this story Ella can’t wait to grow up, because one day she will become a fairy like her mother. She sees her mother click her heals three times and say the word Marshmallow, and watches her turn into a fairy with sparkling wings. She is always in awe at how beautiful and sparkly her mother becomes. On a side note, each fairy has their own special code word, to change them into fairies.  Her mother even takes classes from a teacher on Fairy Tube, which Ella watches with her mother. The one thing is her mom is not very good with her computawand, as she never remembers the right magic codes to enter for her spells. Ella learns by watching her mother and from watching the Fairy Tube.

Now your probably wondering what the computawand is, well it’s actually a fairy wand, disguised as a phone. Ella is not allowed to tell anyone that her mother, aunts, and grandma are all fairies. Through out this Book it takes you on different adventures of spells gone wrong, and you will notice how Ella comes to the rescue. Now these adventures are rather fun as they start off with little things that happen every day in life. I don’t really want to tell you about the adventures as I think it would spoil you reading the book. The question is does Ella have what it takes to be a fairy one day, or will she face more glitches than glitter?

In case you don’t know who Sophie Kinsella is, she is the author of the best selling Shopaholic series, as well as the novels Can You Keep a Secret?, The Undomestic Goddess, Remember Me?, Twenties Girl, I’ve Got Your Number, Wedding Night, and Finding Audrey. She lives in England.

Our Thoughts:

My daughter and I read this book together, we took turn reading the pages. It was really hard for us to put the book down as we always wanted to know what would happen next with Ella and her Mom. There was lots of laughs to be had reading this book. I really enjoyed the time reading it with my daughter.  The book shows how Ella looks up to her mother and just how close the two of them are. I did have to laugh when she brought up the girl Zoe, who lives next door, and calls her NOT best friend. The girl Zoe was pretty snobby in the book, so I could see why she wasn’t liked.

My favorite part of the book was when Ella’s mom was sick. She had the fairy flu. She was told that she needed to rest and was not allowed to do any magic. Especially magic where she would try to cure herself or her symptoms would get worse. Like any mom it is hard to rest and well we want to cure ourselves as we have so much to do. Let’s just say that she did manage to go from red spots to green spots. Oh and the bouncing bed did sound like it was fun until it landed them on top of a roof. I loved how she had Hercules arms that were so very strong. I had to chuckle when she asked to keep them. The poor neighbor who was on his roof had a scare that she was some sort of monster. Grandma comes to save the day and of course Mom gets scolded and was told to rest. Yes she does get better. You have to read the story for yourself because it was really kind of funny.

One thing I want to mention is we loved the illustrations throughout the book. They gave great visuals that went very well with the story.

Honestly, my daughter and I are hoping that this becomes a series of books. We liked it that much and hope there are more to come!
