Solar Eclipse 2017 – 78% Totality

Monday was the Solar Eclipse. We weren’t sure that we were going to see it as they were predicting clouds and rain. However, it turned out to be a sunny day and the rain stayed away. We were able to see the solar eclipse. Where I am at we could only see 78% totality. Even being able to see that was cool enough for me! We were suppose to meet at the park that day but with the weather they were predicting it was cancelled and we ended up doing something else. We headed to the Paper Factory in Appleton. They had a Solar Eclipse Party. It was a lot of fun for the kids.

The door opened at noon and the kids could enjoy the museum as well as the different activities they had set. We started out making a sheet with the planets. We put them in order and we listed them. We also had the chance to make Suns out of paper. Yes we did make the paper from pulp which was really a fun activity to go through the stages of homemade paper making. They had coloring sheets out that we took home to color later. There was a model of the sun that we made with the earth and the moon. We also made a pastel art of the solar eclipse. We only really did one activity before the eclipse and then the kids took off to play in the play area.

We spent about 40 minutes inside before we headed outside. We had our solar glasses all ready. I did get pictures of the eclipse, however these pictures were taken on my friends cell phone. She knows who she is Thank you for letting me use them. The kids put there glasses on a couple times. I think us adults were more interested then the kids. The glasses kinda got passed around to others who didn’t have them so they could view the eclipse. Some had paper with holes punched so they could see the shading but it didn’t seem to work very well. We waited until just past peek before we headed back inside to finish up the other activities we didn’t get to. When we took these pictures we did use just straight cell phones. The pictures were taken through our solar glasses. Our eyes were protected as we took these pictures. Just in case you were going to ask…..

One of the activities we also did before we came outside was make bracelets. The kids were allowed to use 2 – 3 UV Beads in there bracelet. It looked white when you were in doors but when you went outdoors the beads changed colors. It was interesting to see whose beads turned to what colors. Needless to say though my daughter didn’t wears hers to long because she didn’t like the pokiness of the pipe cleaner.

After we were finished we headed to grab some lunch and had taken it to the park to eat. The kids ended up playing at the park for a couple hours. It turned out to be a really fun filled day for us. My daughter fell asleep on the way home.
