Fido’s Favourites: Irresistible Carob Strawberry Dog Treats

Our girls love Carob and I’m always looking for more ways to incorporate it.  This is not a Treat I make often, but it’s especially cute around holidays like Valentine’s Day.  They are also super easy to put together as there is no actual baking involved.  Who doesn’t love a no bake treat!

Why Homemade Dog Treats?

Before we jump into the kitchen, let’s talk about the importance of homemade dog treats. While store-bought treats can be convenient, they often contain additives, preservatives, and artificial ingredients that may not be the best for your pup’s health. By making treats at home, you have full control over the ingredients, ensuring that your furry friend gets only the best.

The Appeal of Carob Strawberry Molded Treats

Now, let’s discuss why carob strawberry molded treats are a hit among dogs and their humans alike. Carob is a safe and healthy alternative to chocolate, making it perfect for dogs. It has a naturally sweet flavor that pairs beautifully with the tartness of strawberries. Together, they create a delectable combination that dogs simply can’t resist. Plus, molding the treats into fun shapes adds an extra element of excitement for both you and your pup.

Variations and Customization

While we’ve used strawberries, Coconut Oil and carob chips, the strawberries could easily be swapped out for another fruit (try pumpkin, cranberry, blueberry, banana or apples, for example).

You can definitely go further with your customization.  These could easily be turned into a frozen treat by making the carob layer thinner and swapping out the coconut oil in the other layer for something like yogurt, kefir or coconut milk!

These measurements are approximations.  Feel free to add a little more or a little less depending on your tastes.  Since it will firm back up in the fridge, the ratios are a little bit flexible than your traditional baked recipe.

What you’ll need

  • A cute silicone mold of your choice (these heart shaped molds are cute for Valentine’s Day, or these paw prints are great for any occasion)
  • A sturdy object, like a baking sheet, cutting board or a large plastic lid
  • 2 microwave safe containers
  • A spoon
  • Cutting board & knife

Carob Layer Ingredients & Instructions

  • 1/2 cup carob chips
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil

In a microwave safe container, add the carob chips and coconut oil.  Microwave at 30 second intervals, stirring well in between, until melted and smooth

Strawberry Layer Ingredients & Instructions

  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 3-4 strawberries, finely chopped (or pureed, if preferred)

In a microwave safe contained, add coconut oil. Microwave in 15 seconds intervals until melted.  Add finely chopped strawberries

Instructions

  1. Think ahead about what you want to appear on the top of the treat and which layer you want at the bottom (feel free to change it up or even do some that are all carob or all coconut oil and strawberry)
  2. Place your molds on a moveable sturdy object like a baking sheet, cutting board or large plastic lid
  3. Prepare the layer that you want on top, and pour it into molds, about halfway (more or less depending on your preference)
  4. Place in the fridge to harden for 30 mins to an hour
  5. Repeat steps 3 & 4 with the second layer
  6. Return to the fridge for 2-3 hours and serve!

Storage

Store in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 7 days or in the freezer up to 3 months.

Tips for Success

  • Use high-quality carob chips and fresh strawberries for the best flavor.
  • Adjust the amount of coconut oil as needed to achieve the desired consistency.
  • Get creative with your molds and decorations to make the treats even more fun for your pup.
  • Remember to adjust the size of the mold you use to the size of your dog, or break treats into smaller portions for serving

Health Considerations

Most experts estimate that dogs need about 10-15% fat in their diet, so keep in mind that any additional fats (including coconut oil) should be given in moderation.

As always, if you have any concerns with ingredients, please ensure you consult a veterinary professional.
