Homemade Blueberry Ginger Dog Treats: A Tasty and Healthy Option

When it comes to treating our furry companions, we all want to provide them with something tasty and healthy. That’s where homemade blueberry Ginger Dog Treats come into the picture. Bursting with flavour and packed with nutritional benefits, these treats are a great way to show our dogs some love.

While my dogs find moist treats with meat to be higher value, I prefer to have a treat that I can leave on the counter at air temperature and not have to worry about it going bad within a week’s time.  Something that is available for a quick reward that I don’t need to run to the fridge any time I need a treat.  Even without meat, these healthy Blueberry Ginger treats are a medium / medium-high value treat to our dogs.

Health Benefits of Blueberry Ginger Dog Treats

Blueberries and ginger are two powerhouse ingredients that bring a plethora of health benefits to our canine companions. Blueberries are rich in antioxidants, which help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. They are also packed with vitamins C and K, as well as dietary fibre, making them beneficial for a dog’s overall well-being.

Ginger, on the other hand, is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, which can aid in reducing joint pain and inflammation in dogs, particularly for those suffering from arthritis. It can also soothe upset stomachs and aid in digestion. The combination of blueberries and ginger creates a potent treat that promotes overall health for your four-legged friend.

If your dog has food sensitivities to eggs, these treats can be made completely vegan by using flax or chia seeds instead of egg and by omitting the honey from the recipe.

Blueberry Ginger Dog Treats Recipe

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 20 minutes + optional dehydration time

Temperature: 350°F / 175°C

Yield: about 340 medium-sized

You will need

  • A blender or food processor
  • Oven-safe silicone molds (or a baking sheet or pan with a lip)
  • A small bowl
  • A spatula

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp flaxseed or chia seeds + 6 tbsp water (or 2 eggs)
  • 1 cup blueberries (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 tsp ground ginger (fresh or dried)
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 cup dog-safe flour
  • 1 tbsp honey (optional)
  • Water, if needed

Steps

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C)
  2. If using flaxseed or chia seeds instead of eggs, grind them to a powder using a food processor or blender
  3. Place flaxseed or chia seeds in a small bowl and mix with 6 tbsp of water.  Set aside to gel for 5 minutes
  4. In a food processor or blender, mix egg (if using egg instead of flaxseed or chia seeds), blueberries, ginger, softened coconut oil and honey (optional).  Blend well
  5. Add flour and blend
  6. Check the consistency of the mixture.  It should be between a pancake batter and a cake batter.  Add water to thin if needed and mix until smooth
  7. Spread mixture into molds using a spatula and tap against the counter gently to remove air bubbles.  Remove excess.  Tip: If you don’t have any oven-safe molds, you can use a baking sheet or baking pan with a lip, spreading the mixture in a thin layer
  8. Bake for 18-25 minutes, depending on the size of your molds
  9. Remove from oven once fully baked.  Treats will brown slightly and begin to rise slightly out of molds
  10. Allow to cool slightly before removing from molds
  11. Optional – to make treats crisper and able to be left at room temperature, complete a 2nd bake to dry them out.  Set the oven to a lower temperate (300°F /150°C) and bake until crisp.  Medium treats took approximately 30 minutes more.
  12. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely

Storage

For moist treats (no 2nd bake) – store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week, or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

For crisp/dehydrated treats – store them in an airtight container at room temperature.  If fully dehydrated, these will last at room temperature for many, many weeks.  Or portion and store some in the freezer for up to 3 months.
