How to Make Homemade Coconut Yogurt Dog Treats – a Step-by-Step Guide

Dehydrating can be a little overwhelming when you’re just starting out.  There are a lot of variables including the moisture in the food, the slice or thickness of the food, your humidity and altitude, the temperature and several other variables.  However, it really is easier than it seems and it yields some delicious results.

These treats have gained popularity among dog owners for their nutritional benefits and tasty appeal. In this post, we’ll delve into the advantages of dehydrated treats, discuss the benefits of coconut yogurt, provide a homemade recipe, and offer tips for maximum enjoyment.

I am not an expert in dehydration and have really only just begun to experiment with it.  It took me a few tries to get this recipe right (the first attempts were delicious puddles / flat disks).  I also don’t have a proper dehydrator; my options are our regular oven, our convection toaster oven or our air fryer.

My husband got an air fryer for Christmas this year and was excited by all the different things it could do.  It could air fry, bake, broil, reheat and dehydrate!  The most thing we have used it most for it to cook chicken, but it has been fun experimenting with the dehydrate feature.  I purchased a small stand to create shelves and allow me to dehydrate more at once.

Benefits of Dehydrated Coconut Yogurt Dog Treats

Dehydrated coconut Yogurt Dog Treats are packed with nutritional advantages for your furry friend. The combination of dehydration and coconut yogurt offers numerous benefits, making them a great addition to your dog’s diet.

Yogurt offers your dog several benefits including probiotics for digestive health, immune support, calcium and protein and much more.  Many dogs with allergies or intolerances may benefit from yogurt (if you are unsure if your dog’s allergies would allow for yogurt please consult your vet).  Please note, the probiotic bacteria in yogurt are killed at temperatures above 130°F / 54°C.

The benefits of coconut for dogs include improved skin and coat, improves digestion, boosts immune system and some anti-inflammatory properties.  Coconut is a healthy source of fibre for our dogs.

Moreover, the dehydration process helps preserve nutrients, extends shelf life, and enhances the treat’s texture, making it a convenient option for dog owners.

Tips for Making and Using Dehydrated Coconut Yogurt Dog Treats

  • Flour alternates – if you don’t have coconut flour on hand, try tapioca flour, oat flour, almond flour or any other dog-safe flour
  • If your yogurt is watery, ensure you remove excess liquid by straining with a clean kitchen towel or piece of muslin
  • Don’t have a dehydrator or air fryer with a dehydration function?  You can use the lowest setting on your oven, but cook time will need to be decreased accordingly
  • Keep in mind that dehydrated treats are more concentrated, so offer them as occasional snacks or rewards rather than as a main meal.
  • Monitor your dog’s reaction to the treats, especially if they have allergies or sensitivities to coconut or any other ingredients. Consult your veterinarian if you have any concerns.
