Lee County plans 10-year anniversary celebration of North Fort Myers Recreation Center

Fort Myers, FL, Sept. 21, 2023 – Lee County invites the community to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the opening of the North Fort Myers Recreation Center. A month of events will culminate in a “birthday party” for the rec center building 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25.
Join Lee County Parks & Recreation staff for rec center tours, a photo display and birthday cake during the Oct. 25 event. Brief comments from Lee County Commissioners and other county officials will be given at 11:30 a.m. The event is free and open to the public.
The recreation center is located at 2000 N. Recreation Park Way, adjacent to the North Fort Myers Public Library just off Business U.S. 41 north of Bayshore Road.
Events leading up to the celebration are planned nearly daily in October. They include ceramics, badminton, volleyball, basketball, Jazzercise, Tai Chi, shuffleboard, Halloween crafts, table tennis, pickleball, disc golf, Fall Fest, karate and hiking. A complete schedule is available at www.leeparks.org/nfm.
The North Fort Myers Recreation Center is one of four large rec centers in the county’s parks department. Participating in most programs at the center requires a one-time, lifetime membership of $10 per individual or $25 per family. Memberships may be purchased at any of the recreation centers.
The county’s first recreation center in North Fort Myers was in the boardroom of the Little League building on site at North Fort Myers Community Park. Then the rec center expanded into a portable trailer on the south side of the shuffleboard courts. The county’s first North Fort Myers Recreation Center in a permanent building opened in late 2002 to enhance space for more programs and the already successful after-school program. The current 33,000-square-foot building opened to the public with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Oct. 25, 2013.
The center has multipurpose rooms for meetings, youth and adult recreational and educational programs, a fitness center, game room and a gymnasium. The gymnasium has a multipurpose basketball and volleyball courts built to high-level traveling-tournament standards. Other sports can be played on the hardwood floor. The center is constructed of concrete, masonry and steel, and it serves as an emergency shelter. The center also has an outdoor covered patio that overlooks a green space for community events and performances.
