When, why, and how to socialize your husky puppy the right way

When does socializing start with your puppy?

Socializing your Puppy starts with the breeder. We start handling these puppies gently at a very young age. They learn a humans touch is a positive thing. They understand when they see us coming into the nursery they are going to have play time with toys, or get some yummy food. If you visit a breeder and all the puppies run to the back of the kennel instead of running to the front to greet you, then it’s obvious they are not getting the social start they need. It can some times be hard to get that puppy where it needs to be socially if the foundation is not in place from the start. Only your breeder can do that since they spend the first crucial weeks with the puppies. It’s then up to you to build on that foundation. Your puppy will need to continue seeing new places, people, other dogs and situations throughout it’s puppy stage.

Why do we socialize our puppy?

I think we all know why you should socialize your puppy. You want your puppy to grow up to be a very confident dog some day. A confident dog will take on new situations without much or any stress. Have you every seen a thick mucus build up on the lips of your puppy or dog? This is caused from your dog being stressed about a situation it’s in at that moment. This can be a new place, car ride, strange people, strange sounds, new smells, or other dogs. If it’s been sheltered from experiencing new things all it’s life it’s usually not going to react in a positive way to them. These dogs don’t usually get to do a lot of things like social dogs do because they are problematic for the owner to take out in public. This is not the dogs fault but the owners fault. Still the dog is the one who suffers.

How to socialize your husky puppy

As I already stated we the breeder should start the social process with your puppy before it goes home with you. It’s very important for you to continue the process. You will be getting the puppy and raising it up at the most crucial time for socialization. Start by letting your new puppy explore the new surroundings at your house. It needs to see and walk on carpet, hardwood floors, and encounter steps. Make your puppy walk on these surfaces and go up and down steps. Your puppy needs to see people wearing sunglasses, masks, tall people, short people, and kids. They need to encounter people with beards, bald people, and people with long hair.

They need to be exposed to sounds like lawnmowers, weed eaters, and vacuum cleaners. Invite the whole family over to play with your new puppy. Make it fun and a positive experience for the puppy. By exposing him to new things all the time he is getting out of his comfort zone letting him know he will encounter new things all the time and there is no reason to fear them.

Take everything slow so not to overwhelm the puppy. 1 or 2 new people can start playing slowly with the puppy at first and then let the play group grow to the whole family is involved. This will condition him to accept large numbers of strangers. This will be very helpful when you go to public places with the new puppy. We recommend starting out with a friends house. Then move on to the pet store or a park. Make sure he is vaccinated before going to dog parks. Line up play dates with other puppies or dogs as long as they are up to date on shots. Puppy classes are a great way for him to learn and socialize too. Doing all these things will help your puppy grow up to be a well socialized and confident dog.
