Everyone loves the stretchiness of silly putty; it’s memorizing. Figuring out how to get silly putty out of carpet isn’t as fun or memorizing. Luckily, there are tricks you can use to get blobs of silly putty out of your carpet.

Let’s take a look at a few methods of removal. Before you try any of these methods, try to pick off as much of the silly putty as possible. You might be able to pick some up with playdough or a lint roller.

Method 1: Freezing The Silly Putty

One of the easiest methods to remove silly putty is by freezing it. The method works with ice cubes, but if you have ice packs, it would work just the same. Some people like the cans of compressed air, but you need to be careful with that method. Compressed air can give you freezer burn.

1. Fill a Bag with Ice

First, put several ice cubes in a plastic bag, the number of ice cubes depends on the size of the silly putty. You will want at least three or four, or enough to cover the entire surface.

2. Place on Top of the Silly Putty

Then, put the bag of ice cubes on top of the silly putty. Make sure it’s fully covered by the bag. Let it there for 2-3 hours. You might have to refill the bag with new ice if it melts during the process.

3. Break Up Frozen Silly Putty

Last, use a knife or something with a hard surface to break up the hardened silly putty. Try to break it up into tiny pieces that you can easily pull up from the carpet. You can vacuum the small bits or just pick them up by hand.

Method 2: Use Detergent

If you don’t want to use the frozen method, the next is to clean the carpet with laundry detergent. I’ve found that powder detergent works better than liquid detergent, probably due to potency and strength, but liquid will do the job effectively as well.

1. Mix Detergent with Water

First, mix two spoonfuls of mild laundry detergent into a cup of warm water. You don’t want to use a detergent that has bleaches or chemicals that might stain the carpet.

2. Soak Detergent over Silly Putty

Next, soak a cotton ball in the diluted detergent mixture. You can also use a towel or washcloth. Blot the carpet stain and any remaining silly putt. Cover the entire stain with the diluted detergent mixture. Let the detergent soak over the area for 20-30 minutes. Then, take a dry cloth and press it down in the area hard to soak up the detergent and stain.

3. Wipe With Damp Cloth

Use a damp cloth to wipe up the stained area. The stain left behind by the silly putty should be gone by now, and any leftover bits should come up easily.

Method 3: Try Nail Polish Remover

The next method uses acetone nail polish remover, but you can use rubbing alcohol as well if you don’t have nail polish remover.

1. Soak a Cotton Ball

Soak a cotton ball in acetone nail polish remover. If you don’t have a cotton ball, you can use a washcloth or towel, but you’re going to stain the cloth, so make sure it’s something that you can toss out or don’t mind being stained.

2. Blot the Area

Take that cotton ball and blot the silly putty with it. Make sure you cover the entire area with the nail polish remover to be fully effective. Let it soak in the area for 10 to 20 minutes.

3. Scrape the Spot

Use a knife or something sharp and hard to scrape away the silly putty. Remove the pieces that you scrape up by either pulling away with your fingers or using a vacuum hose.

4. Repeat the Process

Repeat the process until the silly putty is gone. Sometimes, you may have to use more nail polish remover or freeze the remaining bits of the silly putty with an ice pack.

Surprisingly, this method also works with hand sanitizer. It’s also alcohol-based but it has a thicker consistency. You can rub hand sanitizer over the area and massage it into the area. Then, scrape it up with a knife or even your fingers.

Extra Tips for Getting Silly Putty Out of Carpet

• When the silly putty is a bit stubborn, tr putting some WD-40 on the area to help lubricate it for easier removal. Spray WD-40 over the area and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Then, rub the area with a dry cloth for a few minutes. Rinse with soapy water, and it’s gone. WD-40 might have a reaction on your carpet fibers, so use it with caution.
• Many parents have success with Goo Gone, which is available at most stores. Just use some Goo Gone and hot, soapy water. It takes about 10 minutes to remove totally, but remember that the chemicals can bleach your carpet.
• Some people claim that rubbing Fels Naptha Soap over the putty helps to get it up easier.
• The stain left behind after the silly putty has been removed can be tricky to get out. Try a foaming carpet cleaner at the store.

Silly putty may be a childhood classic toy, but it can be frustrating for parents to remove from carpet and other fabrics. It sticks to your hands and all fabrics, including your shirts. Figuring out how to get silly putty out of carpet is something all parents will eventually face.
