Make Lasting Changes In Your Life: A Quick Guide

Have you very decided that enough is enough and from this moment on you will make a significant change in your life? Only to be faced with disappointment and failure when you miss your goal? Well, you are not alone, as many of us struggle with this experience, and it can be incredibly frustrating and demotivating. Happily, there are some strategies you can use when you want to make a significant change in your life that will make it easier and more effective to achieve. Read on to find out what they are.  Slow and low  Whether it’s meditating more regularly, or exercising every day, going at your new objectives at 100% can seem appealing. After all, if you put in loads of effort and time, won’t you achieve your new goal much faster? The surprising answer to this is no, and this is the reason why. Going at things at 100% is a sure-fire recipe for burnout, which leads to failure because you have no juice left in the tank to maintain your actions. Indeed, studies have shown that a much better way to approach making changes in your life is to go low and slow. This means at first choose a lower goal than you think you can do, then allow yourself to get into the habit of doing this goal, and slowly build once you have done that.  For example, instead of deciding that you have to exercise for 5 hours a week minimum, you set a goal of exercising for a minimum of 5 minutes a day. On some days you will be able to do much more than this, and on others even that 5 minutes will be hard. However, by doing these tasks regularly you will build confidence and momentum which will help you establish a proactive attitude over the long term.  Get some help  Another thing that can help you successfully make changes in your life, is getting some support from others. No woman is an island after all, and having someone to discuss your goals with and be accountable to can be hugely helpful and motivating.  For some people, this person will be family members or friends. While others may benefit from working with a professional such as an experienced online life coach, or counsellor. Indeed, working with a professional can be particularly helpful because they will come into the situation with an open and objective mindset which can help you identify any blindspots you may have that are blocking your progress.  Set your parameters  Last of all, having a specific goal that can easily be measured can help you make successful changes. This is because you will much more easily be able to see whether you are achieving the goals you have set for yourself or not. If you are, this will give you additional motivation to keep going and if you’re not, you will more quickly be able to spot this and correct the course.  One way of setting specific parameters for your goals is to use the SMART principle, which you can find out more about in the video below.
