Geek of the Week: Alicia Alexandra from the EightBitBlond Blog

The week’s featured geek Alicia Alexandra, aka EightBitBlond, took a break from preparing for PAX West to answer a few geeky questions about gaming, sci-fi and early geekdom. She keeps busy blogging, streaming and podcasting about the gaming industry and community while covering everything from local events to geek inspired food creations.
1) Introduce yourself:
My name is Alicia Alexandra, but I’m better known as EightBitBlonde online. When I’m not working at my day job as a social media and community manager in the gaming industry, I spend my time creating live gaming content as a partnered streamer on Mixer, recording a weekly game review and culture podcast at Girls on Games and writing for my own blog.

2) What do you geek out on?
I’m a big Bethesda fan. I’ll play just about any of their IPs but I absolutely LOVE Fallout. I have an extensive collection of Fallout merchandise and memorabilia and no matter how many times I play any of the games in the series, I enjoy it just as much as if it were my first time. Normally I err on the side of fantasy, but there is something about Fallout’s setting and lore that I just can’t get enough of.

Xbox is another one of my passions. I just love the brand, the platform and the community that I have managed to build over the past couple of years. Fun fact: my husband and I actually met on Xbox Live while playing Halo 4. We were both living in different countries and different time zones for over two years of our relationship, and during that time Xbox Live made being apart much easier by allowing us to party up and game together.

I also Geek out over Dungeons and Dragons (5th Edition, where I play a Gnome Druid named Allywick), attending Renaissance Faires, watching anime, painting tabletop miniatures and cooking!  I host a semi-regular segment called Fork’n Geek where I channel my love of food and recreate recipes and dishes inspired by all sorts of things (fantasy books, video games, TV shows, etc.) live on-stream with my community.
3) Marvel or DC? and Why?

Marvel, for me. Both when it comes to comics and on-screen universes. I’m a fan of how Marvel tends to lean into the more campy and colorful alongside their more serious character and story arcs. (Also, they have Squirrel Girl. Enough said.)

4) Star Wars or Star Trek? and Why?

I have to go with Star Wars on this one. That’s not to say I don’t also enjoy Star Trek (or Stargate or Andromeda or Farscape or well, pretty much any sci-fi series) but my parents share my interest in Star Wars and the original trilogy was a pretty common pick for movie night in our household when I was growing up.

5) Favorite video game now, or as a kid, or both if you are a long-time gamer.
This is a tough one. Fable was the game that got me into gaming as more than just a past time and introduced me to gaming forums. Nowadays a majority of my gaming time is spent playing Elder Scrolls Online and I love not only the game but the community as well.

6) Were you a geeky kid or did you come into it later in life?
I would say, and so would the rest of my family if you asked them, I was always a geek. There was always something I was intensely interested in and determined to share with others (whether they were interested or not) and I was also a voracious bookworm.

I only started to really lean into geek culture and calling myself a geek when I started high school and began exploring the vast world of the internet and online communities dedicated to my interests. That was when I realized there were so many people out there that I could share my passions with and also a way to find and learn about new ones.

7) Are you working on anything right now you’d like to share?
I just launched on an on-going series called Waypoint Washington on my blog, where I showcase geeky things to do in the greater Washington area. Everything from museum exhibits to themed restaurants to LARP events and anything in between. There is so much to explore with a thriving geek community in the PNW, so I’m excited to see where this series is going to take me.
