A Childs Sized Microscope: Through Their Eyes

My lovely daughter is obsessed with science. She loves the cause and reaction and she loves to see what makes things work or not work. She is my little scientist. So when I was offered to test out a child Sized microscope at a discount in exchange for our honest thoughts and opinions, we jumped on the opportunity.

The packaging on the child sized microscope is lovely

~disclosure: as I mentioned, I reviewed this child’s microscope at a discount, in exchange for my families honest thoughts and opinions. That said, they are all ours, and we would have said these things had we paid full price. To learn more, please see my Disclosures and Such page~

First things first

When we got to the post office on Friday, we were alarmingly shocked at the weight of the child sized microscope. It fit in a locker, and weighed in at a whopping 10.6 ounces! I will admit I was thinking that quality might be lacking at the weight of the child’s sized microscope.

The packaging is perfect for displaying whats in the box. The company included little windows for looking at whats inside, and the writing is bold in plain English. The box also gives ideas as for what to use this thing for.

Buster always wants to help. We are opening the package in this picture

Whats inside

Inside the box, nestled in styrofoam, you will find

  • A child sized microscope with three levels of zoom, a focusing wheel, contained stage and electric light
  •  1 slide prepared with shards of glass
  •  2 plastic containers for specimen storage
  •  labels
  • a black box holding the labels
  • 4 blank slides
  • 1 lens cap
  • plastic tweezers

What you won’t find inside are batteries and instructions. The batteries, no big deal, as I kind of expect to have to supply my own any time I make a purchase. The instructions, on the other hand, I need those.

What is a child sized microscope like?

Inside the box is a ton of goodies, but no instructions! Guess we will just wing it!

With this little guy weighing so little, it’s easy to think that you are going to get sub par quality, but when it comes to actually using it, I was pleasantly surprised. For our looking enjoyment, we found a worm, Epsom salt, table salt, dirt, yucky standing water and, my favorite, glitter!!! We found that depending what you were looking at, the most difficult part was getting the two sides to stay together and get them under the slide holder.

This is where instructions would come in handy.

Oh what fun this microscope will be

Checking out the Epsom salt under the child sized microscope!

The fact that there are 3 different levels of zoom (I am willing to bet there is a techy name for that? Please correct me in the comments!) and that you can adjust the table height, will make this not only fun but educational as well. I am a tad concerned that the plastic will not hold together long (especially if my children are the ones using it!).

Close up. That silver knob raises up and lowers the table!

To be honest, I am not sure what to do with the labels or the box they came in. But the collecting bottles are nice, with little lids that fit perfectly. The dang slides have to have a trick to them to get them to hold water and stay on the table. If you know this, you can tell me that in the comments as well!

Overall, we are content with our child sized microscope.

My little budding scientist says that this microscope is a winner!

Considering we have no instruction manual, and we have winged it, for the most part, we are pretty content with our child sized microscope. If I could give the manufacturer one piece of advice it would be to include instructions. I would also like to see a little more weight to the legs and they seem a little tippy.  As for the buyer, enjoy this. I loved to look with the kids at all the little things up close. My favorite was the glitter because well, reasons. Bug would say that she enjoyed the worm and did not want to share, and Matthew loved the mud!
