Wow! What a find this place was. When wandering around the old town of Split on our second evening we stumbled across this tiny restaurant nestled in a back street. Hidden from the rat race and tourists who aren’t willing to explore this wonderful small Fish restaurant serving local Dalmatian cuisine.

It was completely full when we arrived we didn’t think we would get a table. However we asked one of the waiters how likely it was to get a table and he gave us a look as if to say “you’ll be lucky!” His colleague butted in thankfully and said that a party was just finishing up and if we cared to wait we could have their table providing we were done by 9.30pm. That was an hour and a half to order, dine and leave which was more than enough time in my eyes. He cleared the table and we took our seat

I ordered a glass of local Croatian white wine which was full of peach and apricot flavours. Steve had a locally brewed beer. We looked at the menu and there was so much choice for fish lovers like us. As we were looking our waiter said that we should go for the fish platter for two. All locally caught fish cooked on the grill and served with salad and bread. We took him up on his recommendation as the thought of fresh sea bass, sea bream, tuna and large prawns was too enticing.

In the time between ordering our drinks and our food order being taken I couldn’t tell you how many people popped their heads around the door looking for a table. I think the waiters were getting a little uptight as they were trying to run a busy and buzzing restaurant. Stopping every two minutes to tell someone that they were fully booked could be a little grating. They weren’t rude but they were getting a little more short as time went on!

When our food arrived we were overwhelmed by the amount of fish there was on the platter. A whole sea bass, a whole sea bream, tuna steas and two large shell on prawns. All cooked simply on the grill with olive oil, salt and pepper. This was served with a lovely crisp salad to share and bread to mop up any juices.

The fish was cooked to perfection and was so delicious that I couldn’t stop raving about the quality and freshness to Steve. Our salad was fresh and crisp. Full of lettuce, shredded cabbage, tomatoes and cucumber with a simple salad and the bread was most certainly homemade. The flavours were to die for and we were very appreciative to our waiter for the recommendation. I almost got sucked in by the calamari as that is my all time favourite if cooked on the grill but I was glad to have the fish platter as it meant Steve and I could enjoy the flavours together.

Desserts don’t seem to be a big thing here in Croatia. It seems most people move on and get an ice cream elsewhere. To be honest I was fine with that as I was pretty full but I think Steve could have squeezed one in! They did have a few choices if you fancied something sweet though. Strudel, some kind of mysterious cake (I have noticed that a lot of restaurants have one or two desserts and “cake” is one of them) and ice cream.

I would totally recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Split but book! I doubt many people will be as fortunate as we were just arriving at the right time.
