Causes of Cracked Heels?
To me, prevention is always better than cure. In order to prevent cracked heels, we must first understand what are the underlying causes of cracked heels.
1. Friction in Shoes
This is most common in ladies especially when we are so fond of wearing heels that ill-treat our feet. It would be good that we have cushion / padding in our shoes to reduce those unnecessary friction between our feet and our shoes when we strut around in those killer heels.
Also, wearing shoes which expose your heels such as sandals and thongs dry out the feet as well. Hence that is why ladies are more susceptible to cracked heels than guys.
2. Walking Barefooted
It is ironic that even not wearing any footwear can cause cracked heels as this dries up our feet real fast.
3. Prolonged Standing
For those who are required to stand for long hours throughout the day, cracked heels can be their bane as the pressure is on their feet for the entire day when they are standing.

Dry climate might cause cracked heels as well but this is not an issue in the super humid Singapore :)
4. Poor Sanitation
Poor hygiene practices can cause cracked heels and even fungal infections.

Tips to Prevent Cracked Heels
My cracked heels situation used to be pretty bad. I went to the salon at Taiwan last year and they actually used a blade to slice off the thick dry skin off my heels.. And... The thick skin grew back like within the next 2 months!
My cracked heels started to turn for the better after I developed the habit of drying my feet after stepping out from the bathroom. The reason is that if you do not dry your feet, the moisture will be exposed to the air and evaporate naturally. Evaporation will draw more moisture from your skin to the air and hence dehydrating your skin and making it lizard dry. Hence it is important that you have to prevent that from happening by taking a few seconds to dry your feet. Also, this act helps to prevent rheumatism!
Oh yes, my neighbour - an auntie in her forties has pretty feet as she wears socks all day even when she is at home. This protects her feet from being exposed to the dry air and hence they are so soft and supple. This is pretty impossible for us as we work in the office and it looks so unglam to wear thick cotton socks like guys unfortunately :( But we can try wearing socks when we are sleeping after we apply lotion onto our feet. This helps to retain moisture and allows the lotion to get absorbed into our skin better in a way :)

I will normally use a body scrub to scrub my feet after filing it with the Scholl Velvet Smooth Express Pedi Electronic Foot File before applying a thick layer of lotion (I'm currently using the Esemtan Body Balm which I think is very nourishing for my dry sensitive skin, you may opt for Castor Oil as well to soften your skin if you do not mind its smell) to moisturize my feet. TAAAA-DAAA ~ I have BABY SMOOTH feet all over again! All done under 20 minutes :)

✔ Hygienic - the Roller Head can be detached for washing / cleaning and instead of buying the entire device again, the roller head can be easily replaced with a new one when it gets blunt over time which again provides further cost savings
✔ Safe - wouldn't damage your skin as the roller head will stop spinning if you exert too much pressure on it
✘ Can be quite messy when flakes of your dry skin starts to fly around - do not file your feet in windy areas!
