The 2015 German vintage is awesome, period. Among the critics and press, there’s the near-constant reference to the legendary 1971s, though of course only time will tell.

German riesling can often represent extreme value, where gifted winemakers cut no corners and still offer wines at everyday drinking prices.  Case in point is today’s focus: Peter Lauer’s “Barrel X” MAGNUMS for only $42; (feel free to grab a few regular bottles for only $18). Considering the Euro at historic lows and the 2015 vintage a historic high, it’s time to bite.

This is one of our absolute favorite Rieslings and a repeat New York Times darling. Last year the Wine Advocate gave 2014 “Barrel X” 93 points, resulting in a near-immediate sellout at the estate. This year, the wine is already sold out at the estate and the reviews haven’t even been published!

Lauer’s “Barrel X,” should be thought of as the equivalent of a Bourgogne Blanc. It is what Florian believes SERIOUS Saar Riesling should taste like: explosive, perfumed, textural with fine layer after fine layer of green apple, citrus and stone fruit, all compressed and focused by a profound whiplash of acidity and mineral.

SWEETNESS/SUGAR Yes, Lauer’s “Barrel X” does have a bit of residual sugar, but it is VERY restrained and the acidity is more than enough to leave the taste buds quivering and begging for more. It’s the balance.

For the summer, for the heat, for whenever… there are few greater wines for the value. As such, the wine will sell out quickly. While we have a small parcel available now, some may have to wait until September for delivery. Wait too long though, and you’ll likely be waiting for next vintage…
