The majority of this collection was purchased on release from the winery mailing list and shipped directly to Domaine Storage. The older vintages were also purchased on release from reputable retailers (Knightsbridge, Sam’s, Binny’s) and stored in our clients temperature and humidity controlled wine fridge until he began storing with Domaine.
Cayuse Vineyards
I still remember the first time I saw a Cayuse wine while working in a cellar in the Northwest years ago. The label stood out even more so than Sine Qua Non or Saxum, and I was curious. Christophe Baron’s family has been making Champagne in France since the 17th century, and being a vigneron to him was “a title you’re born with, not something you become or learn in school.” He traveled the globe, working at wineries in Australia, New Zealand, Romania and Oregon and had originally planned to start a winery from scratch in the Willamette Valley.
While traveling with a friend through the Walla Walla Valley, he stumbled upon an open field with round, softball-sized stones thought to be only suitable for orchards at the time. The terroir reminded him of the cobblestones in his home country, specifically the southern Rhone valley and Chateauneuf-du-Pape. He planted his first vineyard there in 1997 and called it Cayuse Vineyards, derived from the French word cailloux, which means “stones.” He now has five vineyards encompassing 45 acres on land no one thought was suitable for grapegrowing. Jay Miller from The Wine Advocate has consistently given the wines high scores and believes “it may be America’s toughest mailing list to crack… but do whatever it takes to get your hands on a few of these gems.”
