Indian cuisine is known for its various types of bread that goes well with almost all of its dishes. Here are the most popular types of Indian bread that you need to know:
- Naan
Naan is probably the most famous Indian Bread. It is leavened flatbread that is made of wheat flour and cooked in a clay oven. It is best served with dishes like kebab or tandoori chicken.
- Phita
The common base for phita is rice flour, but wheat or corn flour can also be used. It is prepared as small cookies that have sweet or savoury versions filled with either veggies, spices, cheeses, nuts or coconuts.
- Appam
Also known as rice hoppers, Appams are soft pancakes in the shape of a bowl. They are made of fermented rice batter and coconut, paired with coconut milk or stew. They are crispy around the edges and soft in the middle.
- Bhatura
Bhatura is a fried leavened bread made with maida flour, yoghurt, yeast and ghee. It is perfect to pair with any type of curry and a tall glass of lassi, which is a yoghurt drink mixed with spices and water.
- Dosa
Dosa is a pancake made with fermented rice and lentil batter, which is perfect when paired with coconut chutney. It is a staple breakfast in South India, which is often stuffed with potatoes and served with chutneys on the side.
- Roti
If rice is a staple in South India, roti is the staple of North India. Roti is made of wheat flour and is often served with curries.
- Pratha
Paratha is a flaky flatbread filled with veggies like cabbage and potato. It is often served with a side of pickle or yoghurt. Paratha can carry and hold up curries and stir-fries well due to its dense and crisp texture.
- Baati
Baati is a hard bread made with wheat flour, ghee and very little water that is baked over the ambers of dried cow dung resulting in low moisture and extended shelf life. This bread can be either plain or filled with peas or onions.
- Thepla
Thepla is a tasty flatbread prepared with either wheat flour, gram flour or millet flour mixed with various spices. You can make thepla with or without veggies.
- Parotta
Parotta is a famous street food in South India which is a flaky, layered flatbread made with maida flour and is often served with gravy. It can be stuffed with onions, sardines or cheese. For a sweet variety, it is often served with condensed milk, Nutella and bananas.
