Taiwan Porridge A La Carte Buffet @ Goodwood Park’s Coffee Lounge

Coffee Lounge at Goodwood Park Hotel has refreshed its signature Taiwan Porridge a la carte buffet by introducing a new tiered offering – value ($33++ per adult, $19.80++ per child) and deluxe ($48++ per adult, $28.80++ per child) tiers.

Both tiers offer an array of casserole dishes from the buffet section.  These include braised dishes such as braised duck leg with Chinese spice, egg and tau pok in dark soya sauce and braised pork belly in dark soya sauce.  The latter was one of my mum’s favourite, and in her words “很入味” (i.e. flavours are well-infused).
Available in both tiers are comforting dishes such as fried omelette with chye poh, steamed minced pork with salted egg yolk and this stir-fried pumpkin with eggs and garlic – dishes we usually see at Teochew mui or caifan stalls, but well-executed.

Limited to one selection and one serving per table is the Chef’s Special Wok-fried Prawns with Salted Egg Yolk.  This was one of my dad’s favourite given the sweet-savoury combination and well worth the cholesterol.  I had to stop him from eating too many given that it is not exactly the healthiest dish.
This black pomfret with sambal and chincalok dip is also limited to one selection and one serving per table so I would recommend going in groups of 5 (or more when measures have eased) so that you can choose 2 dishes from this selection.
Unique to the Deluxe Tier would be these baby squids in sweet oyster sauce – a dish that reminds me of dining at a few seafood restaurants when I was younger.
Another dish we tried that was exclusive to the Deluxe Tier was this deep-fried beancurd with minced pork.

Round up your meal with desserts of the day – an assortment of Western (think: cakes, bread and butter pudding etc) and Asian (tau suan, peach gum jelly) desserts that varies daily.

Overall, it is a nice place to go to when you are craving for some comfort food.  Whilst none of the dishes are not particularly outstanding or spectacular, they evoke a sense of nostalgia.
