Avarakkai Poriyal is an easy to make Flat Beans stir fry loaded with coconut. Avarakkai is a Tamil word for flat beans. It is super healthy and I’m sharing the recipe with a video today. You can make this in no time and enjoy it with some sambar and rice.

I have earlier shared a recipe of Karnatak style field beans curry. It is made with the seeds inside the beans. Flat beans are also kown as field beans or hyacinth beans. Today I’m sharing a much more easier recipe to make Avarakkai Poriyal.

Avarakkai poriyal recipe
Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 15 minutes

Ingredients
- 15 Avarakkai/Flat beans
- 1/2 cup Freshly dessicated coconut
- 1 tsp Mustard seeds
- 1 tbsp White lentil/urad dal
- 2 dried red chilli
- 1/4 tsp Turmeric Powder
- Salt to taste
- 1 tbsp Vegetable oil
- 1 sprig Curry leaves
- 1/8 tsp Asafoetida/hing
Instructions
- Clean and finely chop flat beans.
- Heat oil in a frying pan and add mustard seeds and when it splutters, add white lentil and Asafoetida. Saute for few seconds till lentil turns light golden brown.
- Add red chillies, curry leaves and saute for few seconds.
- Now add chopped flat beans, turmeric powder and stir it well.
- Keep stirring on medium flame for few minutes.
- Add little water, lower the flame, close the pan with a lid and let it cook till vegetables are cooked and soft. Keep stirring in between.
- Add salt and mix it well. Add grated coconut and give a quick stir.
- Serve it warm with some rice and sambar.
