These homemade Nutella Cookies are heaven for chocolate lovers. The chewy Nutella cookies are tender and delicious with their chocolate chips and chopped hazelnut pieces, but the homemade Nutella chips take them over the top. They're perfect with a hot cup of coffee or dunked into a mug of hot cocoa!

Nutella is an iconic Chocolate hazelnut spread known for its creamy texture and sweet flavor. This makes it absolutely perfect for baking into your next batch of cookies! The creamy spread will add sweetness and a rich, tender texture that makes each Cookie lovely and chewy. They just might become your new favorite cookie!

  • Crunchy and chewy. These cookies have a perfectly chewy texture and bakery-style look. The pieces of chocolate chips, chopped hazelnuts, and Nutella chips add extra texture that makes each one so much fun to eat!
  • So much Nutella. These cookies are a Nutella lover's dream! There is Nutella baked into the cookie dough itself, complemented with cocoa powder and hazelnuts to highlight the traditional chocolate hazelnut flavor. There are actual frozen Nutella chips in the cookie dough as well, so you'll find pockets of warm, gooey Nutella in every bite.
  • Double chocolate chip cookies. There is so much chocolate in this cookie dough! From the Nutella and the cocoa powder to the chocolate chips and the frozen Nutella bites, we might need to call these quadruple chocolate cookies.

Ingredient Notes

To make these delicious Nutella cookies, you will need the following ingredients (full measurements in recipe card below):

  • Nutella - we need Nutella to make the homemade Nutella chips. We also add real, creamy Nutella to the cookie dough to bake that flavor into every bite.
  • flour - all purpose works perfectly for this recipe.
  • cocoa powder - use natural cocoa powder for a rich chocolate flavor.
  • baking soda - this will react with the cocoa powder for a gentle rise.
  • baking powder - this helps leaven the cookies for a chewy, fluffy texture.
  • salt
  • butter - use unsalted room temperature butter.
  • brown sugar - dark brown sugar has the richest flavor.
  • white sugar - this will make sure your cookies have a fluffy texture and perfect sweetness.
  • eggs - these bind the cookie dough together and help it rise.
  • vanilla extract - pure vanilla extract adds a lovely aroma.
  • chocolate chips - choose semi-sweet mini or regular chips.
  • hazelnuts - use chopped roasted hazelnuts for an extra crunch.

Equipment Needed

You will also need the following baking tools and equipment:

  • baking sheets
  • parchment paper
  • piping bag
  • medium or large mixing bowl
  • whisk
  • electric hand mixer
  • spatula
  • cookie scoop
  • plastic wrap
  • wire cooling rack

How to Make the Best Nutella Cookies

First, make the homemade Nutella chips.

These frozen dollops of Nutella take an already great cookie over the top. As they bake, they melt into little pockets of molten Nutella. To make them:

  1. Pipe the chips. Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place the Nutella into a piping bag, cut off the tip, then pipe small chocolate chip sized dollops onto the baking sheet.
  2. Freeze. Place into the freezer to harden for at least 2 hours. Do not remove until right before adding to the Nutella cookie batter.

Now, let’s make the Nutella cookies.

  1. Combine dry ingredients. In a medium to large mixing bowl, add flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Whisk well to combine, then set aside.
  1. Combine wet ingredients. In a large mixing bowl, add Nutella, butter, brown sugar, and white sugar, then beat with an electric hand mixer until fluffy, about 3-4 minutes. Add in the eggs and vanilla, then beat again until smooth.
  1. Add dry ingredients to wet. Add in the flour mixture and fold together with a spatula until well-combined.
  1. Add mix ins. Add in the chocolate chips, chopped hazelnuts, and frozen Nutella chips, then quickly fold until well-dispersed.
  1. Scoop. Prepare a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Using a medium cookie scoop, scoop out your cookies onto the prepared baking sheet.
  2. Chill. Cover lightly with plastic wrap and place the cookies into the fridge to chill for 4 hours (up to overnight).
  3. Preheat. Preheat the oven to 350F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  4. Bake. Bake the cookies in batches by adding 6 cookie dough balls onto the lined baking sheet, spaced 2-3 inches apart. Bake for 13-14 minutes. Allow the cookies to cool for 5 minutes on the pan before transferring onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  1. Repeat. Repeat baking in batches with the remaining cookies.

Recipe Variations

  • Make Nutella-stuffed cookies. Instead of making little chips, freeze balls of Nutella in a silicone tray. Press the frozen Nutella balls into the center of your cookie dough before baking. It'll melt into the most perfect gooey center!
  • Use white chocolate chips. Replace the regular chips in these double chocolate cookies with white chocolate. They'll add a pop of color and extra sweetness.
  • Sprinkle with sea salt. Since Nutella is so sweet, a little salt on top can balance out the sweetness.
  • Nutella ice cream sandwiches. After baking, let the cookies cool and place a scoop of chocolate hazelnut ice cream between two cookies. Press gently and roll the edges in crushed hazelnuts and mini chips. Wrap in plastic wrap, freeze well, then serve.

How to Serve

These Nutella cookies are delicious served on their own, or as part of a cookie box paired with some of my favorite cookies including:

  • Hot Chocolate Cookies
  • Chai Cookies
  • Slice and Bake Pecan Shortbread Cookies
  • Butter Cookies
  • Red Velvet Cookies
  • Soft and Chewy Ginger Cookies

Recipe Tips and Tricks

  • Chill the dough. For the best texture, use properly chilled cookie dough. It's worth the wait. Otherwise, the cookies will spread too much.
  • Line your pan. Lay a piece of parchment on your cookie sheet to remove these Nutella chocolate chip cookies perfectly every time.
  • Rest the cookies. The baking process doesn't end when the cookies leave the oven. Let them rest on the pan to continue baking slowly for at least 5 minutes.
  • Make a double batch. If you know you love Nutella, make two batches. Freeze the extra dough for later to have cookies any time!

Storing and Freezing Instructions

How to Store

Store leftover cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for 4-5 days.

How to Reheat

If you prefer a warm cookie, pop it in the microwave for just 5-10 seconds.

How to Freeze

Baked cookies can be frozen in a freezer-safe bag for several months. You can also freeze the unbaked dough balls. Let them thaw in the fridge before baking like normal.

FAQ

Can I use a different brand of Nutella?

Although we love the classic flavor of Nutella, you might prefer a different brand of chocolate hazelnut spread due to allergies or just flavor preferences. Feel free to use generic Nutella or any other brand of the spread. You can even use creamy chocolate hazelnut butter.

What pairs well with Nutella?

Nutella is incredibly versatile and can be used in so many ways! It's a great dip for fresh fruit, makes a wonderful crepe, and is absolutely heavenly served on top of pancakes, French toast, or waffles. It's also wonderful baked into your favorite sweet treats, like these chocolate Nutella cookies, creamy mousse cups, or your next batch of muffins. Whip it into a luscious frosting for cupcakes or muffins. You can even drizzle warm Nutella over a bowl of ice cream or add it to a milkshake!

Can you freeze Nutella cookies?

Yes! Baked cookies freeze incredibly well. Just let them cool to room temperature, then pop them in a freezer-safe bag for 2-3 months. You can either eat them frozen for a really chewy cookie or let them soften at room temperature.
