As part of the EXPERTS OF EMPOWERMENT Series, sponsored by Green Giant Fresh, I asked Dr. Joe to share some important tips with us on how to have greater longevity. As we age, our bodies require more care and attention to maintain optimal health; and so often, we can easily get off-track. No worries though, these tips remind us how we can help create a better and healthier future simply. From what we eat to how we hydrate, every choice plays a role in our well-being for not only today but tomorrow!

So, here are seven tips to help you age gracefully and healthily to help you while on your own journey to becoming your most healthy self!

Tips for Healthy Aging: What to Eat (and Avoid)

Choose Healthy Oils: Say goodbye to “vegetable oils” like corn, soy, and canola, which are high in linoleic acid, a type of omega 6 fatty acid that causes inflammation in the body which is linked to arthritis, heart disease, stroke, type II diabetes and other health issues. Use extra virgin olive oil and or extra virgin coconut oil instead.

Stay Hydrated: Aging can dull our sense of thirst, so make a conscious effort to drink plenty of pure, filtered water daily. Dehydration can lead to various health issues, so keep that water bottle handy!

Incorporate Raw Foods: As we produce fewer enzymes as we age, eating something raw at every meal can aid in nutrient absorption and provide essential enzymes. Include raw veggies or fruits like broccoli, cucumbers, apples, or a refreshing salad. While raw food has enzymes in them, cooking any food over 110 degrees destroys the enzymes. Broccoli, cucumbers, apples, salad or any raw veggie or fruit will work great.

Avoid High fructose corn syrup: This icky additive is commonly slipped into processed foods and snacks and is something you want to steer clear of as much as you can. Although excessive sugar intake is detrimental to looking young altogether, high Fructose Corn Syrup is believed to be the worst kind for your skin (and overall health). The sugar in your diet can damage your skin’s collagen and elastin, making you look wrinkled with skin that is no longer firm. Suprisingly, gave nectar is even worse. Use stevia or lo han if you need a sweetener.

Eat MORE Plants and veggies: This should be the bulk of your daily meals, as they are loaded with vitamins, minerals, nutrients and fiber. The fiber in potatoes, for example, can help you feel full longer. Fiber has been shown to be part of nutritional plan to help prevent heart disease and keep your cholesterol and blood sugar in check. They are also loaded with antioxidants and nutrients to help your body function better

Moderate Alcohol Intake:  Excessive alcohol consumption, especially sugary drinks, can lead to free radical formation and rob your body of essential nutrients. If you choose to drink, opt for drinks without added sugars and alternate with water. Consider taking a quality B vitamin complex to replenish lost nutrients.

Avoid Fried Foods: Just say no! Foods like corn dogs and French fries can accelerate aging by generating free radicals that damage collagen and contribute to health issues.

Dr. Joe reminds us all that by making mindful choices in your diet and lifestyle, you can promote Healthy Aging and maintain vitality for years to come. Remember, small changes today can lead to significant benefits in the long run.
