    Introduction

Petite Patisserie is the diffusion brand of The Patissier, Singapore's renowned boutique patisserie that specialises in cakes and pastries handcrafted in traditional French style.

The Mousse Cakes by Petite Patisserie are produced with premium ingredients and do not contain any preservatives or artificial agents.

Petite Patisserie's range of products strive to bring more convenience to the consumers by having them readily available at supermarkets such as Fairprice Finest via the Snap Freeze Technology which preserves the cakes' freshness and hence prolong their shelf life.

    Our Experience

It was very nice of Petite Patisserie to deliver 2 Mousse Cakes - Mango Madness and Chocolate Dream to Tracy's abode on a cheery Sunday afternoon.

We have decided to have some bonding time with the kids and to nurture their creativity by hosting this mini cake decoration contest since JJ's birthday is round the corner.

We headed off to NTUC Fairprice to grab some of the ingredients required to decorate the Mousse Cakes such as Whipped Cream, Rainbow Rice, Chocolate Chips and the Cherry Topping. The kids spent a good 20 minutes debating on what ingredients they should get because it seems that the boy wanted everything under the sun to appear on his cake. LOL.

The Mousse Cakes come in standard size of 500g, and hence we requested for 2 cakes to be delivered in view that we have approximately 10 people that will be present for the cake tasting...

    Unboxing the Cake

    Preparing for our Cake Decoration

The cakes were delivered to us in very cute packaging sealed with a plastic wrap. We had fun unboxing it and we took "before" pictures with the Mousse Cakes prior to decorating them in order to compare the difference.

Eager Kids who cannot wait to start decorating their Mousse Cake!

    Before Photos

JJ and Roxanne - see how excited they looked!

Oh yes, in case you guys start to wonder why am I posing with the cake.. That was because this will be a contest between adults (Tracy and I) and the kids (JJ and Roxanne)!

    Le' Strategy

The kids spent a good 10 minutes discussing on their design ideas and drafting a "blueprint" of how their final product should look like..

Brainstorming Session on how to decorate the Chocolate Dream Mousse Cake :)

Le' Blueprint.. Hmm.. Looks very complex and not easily understood by adults..

For Tracy and I, we are minimalists (or you may term it lazy) and are pretty contented with eating just the mousse cake by itself to be honest.. Anyways, we strongly believe that less is more hence there is not much we can think of in decorating the cake.. LOL.

    Le' Process

Grabbing Ingredients for Cake Decoration from the Fridge

We opened up the can of Country Cherries for cake topping

As we prefer eating Iced Mousse Cakes, we wilfully decided not to defrost the cakes and proceeded with the cake decoration although it was highly recommended that we defrost the cakes prior to decoration.

Spreading the Cherries on top of our Mango Madness

    How appetising!!

The kids on the other hand were obsessed with having lots of whipped cream for their cake.. Tsk, how fattening!

Roxanne testing the nozzle whilst squeezing some whipped cream on the paper box.

Roxanne commenced with her cake decoration with JJ watching beside...

Hmmm.. It was supposed to look like a circle, but the results were far from ideal :(

We decided to enhance our Mango Madness with a piece of biscuit purchased in Tokyo...

    Simplicity is Elegance!

The kids decided to spread the whipped cream across the surface of the Chocolate Dream instead

Adding some Chocolate Chips as border.. We caught the kids eating whilst they did the decoration!!!

    Le' Chocolate Chips Border...
Tracy and I were pretty done with our cake decoration and hence have started slacking and spying on our rivals' design...

Ooo.. They added Chocolate and Green Tea Kit-Kats as decoration!

Tracy helped with the sprinkling of Rainbow Rice on the cake...

Roxanne further finished the decor by framing their design with a border of Cherries!

    Amazing... Chopsticks Skills!!!

    Completing their final design :)

    Le' Final Product

Our completed Mango Madness!! We sprinkled some chocolate chips after seeing the kids use them...

Tracy posing with our final product :)

Needless to say.. The kids placed significantly more effort in decorating their Chocolate Dream cake...

It was just so satisfying to pose with the fruit of their labour

    See how proud Roxanne looked!

RAWRRR!! Can't wait to savour the cake!!!

The results were pretty obvious - the story of "The Tortoise and the Hare" repeats itself and the kids have emerged as winners based on their brain and brawn. I think we should stop being so complacent as adults and should start to switch our brains on when it comes to creativity.. LOL..

    Overall Review

The Mango Madness tasted really refreshing. We were glad that we did not defrost it because the cake tasted like mango ice-cream and it simply melted in our mouth!!

The Chocolate Dream on the other hand was a tad too sweet and chocolate-ty for adults. However, the kids enjoyed it very much.

We had much fun decorating the cakes - which is far more important than who won the contest ultimately... We were also amazed by the kids' creativity in the cake decoration and we strongly recommend families to incorporate this activity into their weekend Family Bonding time!

Doing activities together enables families to foster closer relationships and cake decoration is a fun way of spending time with each other in a very affordable way.

Special thanks to Petite Patisserie for the sponsorship and to Tracy's family for hosting this cake decoration event in her house :)
Q: What do you do with the leftover whipped cream?
Answer from JJ: "You simply EAT them!!"  Ewwwww :S
