Mongolian Beef Recipe | Lower Calorie Slimming Recipe

A delicious, lower-calorie Mongolian Beef recipe that is slimming friendly. Soy, chilli and garlic lovers, this one is for you.

Have you ever tried Mongolian Beef before? I have seen a few images on Pinterest and wanted to give it a go myself. A really popular recipe of mine is Chinese crispy shredded beef, and this recipe is similar.

\It is strips of beef with a crispy coating, but this dish has a sweet soy based sticky sauce.

I really liked the flavour in this dish, and it came out perfectly.

I made this recipe using the oven to crisp up the beef, which saves on using a lot of oil and shallow frying.

If you have an air fryer, you could add the beef to this for a few minutes to crisp up and cook.

What is Mongolian Beef?

Mongolian beef is a dish said to be originating from Taiwan consisting of sliced beef, usually paired with spring onions or mixed vegetables.

It is a dish that has been predominately westernised, much like a Chow Mein or Chicken Tikka Masala.

The sauce is sticky, sweet and delicious!

A delicious, lower calorie Mongolian Beef recipe that is slimming friendly. Soy, chilli and garlic lovers, this one is for you.

Ingredients

  • 600g of steak (I used rump as that is what I had in, but you can use flank or thin minute steak)
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce (Plus 1 tsp for marinating)
  • 3 tablespoons cornflour
  • 1 extra tablespoon of cornflour mixed in with some water
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 1 tsp granulated sweetener
  • 60ml beef stock (can be made up from a cube)
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons regular soy sauce (Plus 1 tsp for marinating)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger (finely chopped or minced)
  • 1 red chilli, finely diced (Adjust to your taste)
  • 2 cloves garlic (finely chopped)
  • 1 Sping onion, finely chopped
  • Low-calorie cooking spray

Instructions

  1. First, cut the beef into strips. Spray the beef with low-calorie cooking spray, and add 1 teaspoon of soy sauce and 1 teaspoon of cornflour. Leave this to marinate for at least 1 hour.
  2. Once marinated, add the marinated beef slices to 2 tablespoons of cornflour until lightly coated.
  3. In a bowl, mix the maple syrup and the sweetener beef stock. Mix in the remaining soy sauce. Taste to make sure it isn't too salty, add more stock of so.
  4. Line a baking tray with some greaseproof paper, and lay the steak strips out onto it. Place in the oven for 4 minutes. This should get the steak crispy.
  5. In a wok or frying pan, add some low-calorie cooking spray. Add the ginger and chilli and fry for a minute. Then add in the garlic.
  6. Add the maple syrup and stock mix to the pan.
  7. Let the sauce simmer for about 2 minutes and slowly stir in the cornflour mixed with water. Cook until the sauce has thickened enough to coat the back of a spoon.
  8. Add the beef and scallions and toss everything together for about 30 seconds. There shouldn't be any liquid left in the pan and the sauce should stick to the beef. If you still have sauce, increase the heat slightly and stir until thickened.
