King William, Melbourne CBD

MELBOURNE | Owners Jane and Lyn opened King William as a lockdown side hustle at the end of 2020, to help keep things ticking over while their catering business experienced a lockdown related downturn. With people retuning to the CBD’s offices, the catering side of things is picking up again, and since the sandwich window has proven popular with locals, they’re going to keep it going.

Flavours and fillings are inspired by Jane and Lyn’s childhood, and the things they love to eat, rather than any trends. The ‘Bolly Days’ toastie, features a crispy parmigiana crust on the bread’s exterior, culled with oozing fior di latte and beef bolognese. Another crowd favourite is the ‘Brigadier’. This one’s a soft round roll filled with free range roast chicken, crispy chicken skin, traybake stuffing, zucchini slaw, and gravy.

As well as sandwiches, there’s a few drinks on offer. Flavoured mineral water, and house made sodas like raspberry and red vinegar, cucumber and lime, and pineapple, ginger, and lemongrass. If you’re in the mood for something boozy, you can add a shot of gin, vodka, or Aperol to any of the soda.
