KCH 古晉, North Perth

PERTH | KCH is the official IATA airport code for Kuching, Malaysia. It’s also the name of one of Perth’s must try Malaysian restaurants, KCH 古晉.

My meal here was the first I had straight off the plane when I arrived back in Perth after just over a year. I’d heard a lot of great things about the place, and boy did it live up to expectations.

It’s owner and operated by Calvin Chong (ex Petition) and his friend Gan, both who hail from Kuching. At their low-key North Perth restaurant, they draw inspiration from their hometown (and wider Malaysia) and childhood, with modern flair inspired by experience working in other kitchens. The result is food that’s comforting and respectful of tradition, but also modern and exciting.

The menu is small, featuring a selection of ‘always on’ favourites and rotating weekly specials. Each special, which is announced on Instagram a few days before hitting the menu, comes with a personal story and a bit of history. Often it’ll be something regional that’s not often seen in Perth.

For drinks, it’s an assortment of coffee and tea drinks, plus Malaysian canned drinks. All coffee and tea is sourced directly from Kuching. The KCH isn’t licenced, but you can BYO.
