Crolla’s Gelateria To Open Its Doors in Leith

Local businessman Grant Dalgleish is hopeful that the sun will shine on Leith as he prepares to open the doors to Crolla’s Gelateria to the public next week.

The Traditional gelateria and café, located at 1 Coalhill, Leith is set to open its doors next Friday (10th August). The new eatery will not only sell traditional Gelato but also warm food, fresh coffee from the in-house coffee roaster and hand-made Belgian and Columbian chocolates. The glass-fronted café enjoys spectacular views of the Water of Leith so visitors can enjoy viewing local wildlife and boats in the vicinity.

Having produced and sold authentic Italian Gelato since 1895, the family-run business has become a household name in Glasgow and has since launched several other hugely popular sites across the UK.

Crolla’s gelaterias represent an award-winning family company that has been making exquisite Ice Cream for over 120 years. With lots of flavours to choose from, available as a traditional ice cream cone, indulgent sundae or a unique Coldstone Creation, Crolla’s is one of the only gelaterias to offer this innovative blend to create your own ice cream.

Franchisee Grant Dalgleish, 48, of Dalkeith says, “I am delighted to bring the Crolla’s brand to the people of Leith. I have had the pleasure of working in the food industry for 23 years in a technical sales role and have visited some of the best food producers in the world and travelled extensively. In the latter stages of my career I was heavily involved in the chocolate and ice-cream industry and headed up a project in Italy for a customer. I met Peter Crolla during this time and knew that the traditional Gelato product would be very welcome here.”

Grant continues, “To compliment the finest Gelato we have invested in a coffee roaster so that our customers can have freshly roasted coffee and savour the aroma in the café. Chocolate was also an essential on the menu for me given my background. During my previous role, I visited four chocolate plantations – two in Madagascar and two in Columbia so I am using my knowledge of the best cacao to also bring this to the Crolla’s store. Whilst in Columbia I was invited to plant my own cacao tree, it takes three to five years for the tree to bear pods and this is now happening. The dream is to make chocolate from my own tree and sell it here.”

Peter Crolla JNR, managing director and the fifth generation of Crolla’s, says, “We are delighted to bring Crolla’s to Leith. In 1895 my great-grandfather left the warm sunshine of Italy for the less predictable climes of Scotland and set up his first shop in Glasgow. We are very proud to have been producing traditional Italian ice cream ever since, for over 120 years, using our own secret family recipe.”

Peter continues, “Our stores offer over 80 flavours of ice cream, from traditional vanilla to coconut to cookie dough, and have something to suit every palette. Customers can watch our passionate staff making our amazing Gelato on-site daily and can also to see their own combinations come to life. Our cold-stone creations also allow customers to create their own flavour by mixing their favourite Gelato and toppings together to personalise their sweet treat.”

“It’s not just ice cream. We will also be offering mouthwatering sundaes, milkshakes and smoothies, refreshing frozen drinks and our own freshly made Italian coffee. The Crolla’s team is very much looking forward to welcoming the people of Leith to our new Coalhill store.”
