EVERYTHING BAGEL PRETZEL CHEESE DOGS

Store bought pizza Dough is turned into everything bagel pretzels for these delicious cheesy hot dogs. They are perfect for lunch, snack, or make them mini size for a great appetizer!

I have wanted to make pretzel dogs for a while but never got around to doing it until now. I love it and plan to make these babies all the time!! Using store bought pizza dough makes the process a breeze!

There is one thing that makes pretzel different than bread. Pretzels require a quick dip in a water and baking soda solution prior to getting baked. The baking soda is said to help the pretzel brown and gives it flavor. Some recipes require the pretzel to soak in a warm bath of the aforementioned solution for a minute or two while others call for a quick dip into and out of the water. Then there are ones that require the pretzel to boil for about 30 seconds.

Boiling is the method that I choose. I like to think the payoff is bigger when you put in a little more effort.

The hot dog and Cheese are wrapped inside the pretzel dough prior to the 30-second boil. If you are wondering about how the cheese holds up boiled, no worries! It will soften but will retain its shape and stay intact. I promise! Just remember to stick to the 30-second boil time.

One thing to keep in mind, when assembling these dogs, the hot dog is sliced almost entirely in half and a strip of cheese is sandwiched in the middle. During baking, the cheese will ooze out. Do not fret when this happens! It can easily be pushed back after baking using a round chopstick or a butter knife.

I love the softness and chewiness of these pretzels. And that everything bagel seasoning...it's everything!!

See you next time, friends!!

EVERYTHING BAGEL PRETZEL CHEESE DOGS

INGREDIENTS:

18.5 ounce package pizza dough
5 cups water
1/3 cup baking soda
6 hot dogs
8 ounce block cheddar cheese
1 egg
1 tablespoon water for the egg wash
1 tablespoon everything bagel seasoning
flour for dusting work surface

INSTRUCTIONS:

Allow pizza dough to come to room temperature for 1 hour. This helps the dough from springing back when rolled.

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F. Line a baking pan with parchment paper or spray with cooking spray.

Roll the pizza dough into a rectangle at least 24-inches long and about 1/8-inch thick. Dust the work surface with a light coating of flour if the dough sticks and is hard to work with. Using a pizza cutter or a knife, cut out 6 strips (about 1/2-inch wide) lengthwise.

Slice the block of cheese into fourths lengthwise. Cut each fourth into half lengthwise. You will need only 6 of these strips, leaving 2 unused.

Starting at the tip of the hot dog, slice it in half lengthwise, stopping 1/2-inch short on the opposite end, leaving it intact. Place a strip of cheese in the middle, sandwiching it inside the hot dog halves. Cut off the excess cheese sticking out at the tip.

Add 5 cups of water to a medium saucepan. Add the baking soda. Stir until the baking soda dissolves. Bring water to a gentle boil.

Meanwhile, take one strip of dough and wrap it around a hot dog by starting at the open end of the hot dog and working your way toward the other in a coiling motion. Secure the ends of the dough by tucking it under an adjacent piece of dough. Repeat wrapping the remaining hot dogs.

Carefully place one hot dog into the gently boiling water. Boil for 30 seconds. Using a large slotted spoon or spatula, remove the hot dog. Allow excess water to drip. Place on a paper towel lined surface. Repeat until all of the hot dogs are boiled. Transfer hot dogs onto the parchment lined baking sheet.

In a small bowl, add 1 tablespoon water to egg, beating well to make an egg wash. Brush onto the pretzel dogs. Sprinkle some everything bagel onto each dog. Bake for 12-14 minutes or until golden brown.

To push any cheese that has oozed out back into the hot dog after it is baked, let the cheese to cool off slightly for a minute or two. This allows it to firm up slightly to make it easier to work with. Using a chopstick or butter knife, push the cheese back into the hot dog.

Makes 6 hot dogs.
