Dahi Papdi Chaat Ingredients

Papdi (Papri) – is a round, disc-shaped, and oh-so-crunchy dough, fried to a golden brown perfection. This little delight plays the role of the crispy base in this chaat recipe, giving it that irresistible crunch you’re gonna love!

You can buy the papdi from any Indian supermarket!

Boondi + Yogurt (Dahi) – Whisk the yogurt (Dahi) until it’s as smooth as can be. Once the yogurt achieves a creamy texture, toss in the boondi and sprinkle in the spices. Now, generously drizzle it over the mix of ingredients, infusing the chaat with luscious and creamy goodness.

Veggies – Top the crispy papdi with chopped tomatoes, boiled and mashed potatoes, and finely chopped onions.

Chutneys – For this chaat, we are using two delightful chutneys: the fresh coriander mint chutney (green chutney) and the sweet tamarind chutney (meethi imli chutney). To make things convenient, you can prepare and store these chutneys ahead of time.

Here is the recipe for Sweet Tamarind Chutney | Imli Chutney, it lasts for 3-4 weeks in the refrigerator. RECIPE HERE

Spices – You will need Chaat Masala and Red Chilli powder for this recipe. Red chilli powder adds a subtle heat to the chaat. Adjust the spice level according to personal taste preferences.

Chaat masala is a spice blend that typically includes cumin, coriander, ginger, black salt, and other flavorful ingredients. It gives a distinctive chaat flavor and can be used in various Indian recipes.

You can easily find this online or at any Indian supermarket.

Feel free to customize the spice mix according to your taste preference and availability of ingredients!

Other – You will also need nylon sev to add a crispy texture, freshly chopped coriander leaves to add a herbaceous flavor, pomegranate seeds for garnish, black salt (kala namak) for a distinct salty taste, and sugar for a touch of sweetness. Finally, a splash of lemon juice is added for that perfect finishing touch.

Dahi Papdi Chaat Recipe

Step 1 – Prepare Boondi and Yogurt Mixture

In a bowl, take yogurt (curd / dahi) and whisk it until it turns smooth. Next, add boondi to the smooth yogurt, along with red chili powder, chaat masala, black salt, and sugar. Ensure everything is well combined.

Step 2 – Assemble the Chaat

On a serving plate, arrange the yogurt-boondi mixture. Then place the crumbled papdi on top of the creamy mixture. Layer the smashed boiled potato on top of the papdi layer.

Step 3 – Drizzle the Chutneys

Drizzle over the vibrant green chutney and sweet tamarind chutney (imli chutney), and then sprinkle a bit of chaat masala on top.

Step 4 – Garnish

Top the chaat with chopped onions and tomatoes, then generously garnish it with sev and chopped coriander. Squeeze a bit of lemon juice. Serve immediately for the perfect balance of taste and crunch.

For an extra burst of flavor, consider adding more sweet tamarind chutney and mint-coriander chutney as desired.

Serving Suggestion

This beloved Indian street food is tasty all on its own – it’s got the perfect mix of spicy, tangy, and sweet notes. You don’t need anything else to enjoy its deliciousness.

However, if you’re in the mood, pairing it with a steaming cup of Masala Chai is always a fantastic idea. That’s my preferred way to enjoy it – a delightful combo of flavors!

Be sure to put together the dahi papdi chaat recipe right before serving. If you wait too long, the papdi might lose its crunchiness and turn soggy. So, for the best taste and texture, assemble the chaat just before enjoying it!
