For the Daal (Lentils):

  • 1 cup yellow split lentils (masoor daal)
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2-3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small tomato, chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil or ghee
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • Fresh cilantro leaves for garnish

For the Chawal (Rice):

  • 1 cup long-grain Basmati rice
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon cooking oil
  • Salt to taste

How to make Daal chawal - Daal chawal Recipe

For the Daal:

  1. Rinse the lentils in cold water until the water runs clear. Drain and set aside.
  1. In a large pot, heat the oil or ghee over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds until aromatic.
  1. Add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn translucent and slightly golden brown.
