Extreme Pita History
Alex and Mark Rechichi, two brothers, started Extreme Pita back in 1997. Extreme Pita’s first site, in Waterloo, Ontario, close to Wilfrid Laurier University, closed in 2013.
Over the years, the company has expanded to new locations in Canada (from 1997 to 2003) and the United States (beginning in 2003). The growth threatened long-standing fast-food chains like McDonald’s and Subway. Around 200 establishments had opened across Canada by 2007. In addition to being well-known for its vegetarian alternatives, Extreme Pita touts itself as a healthy, low-fat snack.
Extreme Pita, originally from Canada, opened a store in Arizona, USA, in 2003. Franchises have been essential in the company’s expansion across the United States. Extreme Pita was founded in 2003 in Los Angeles, and since then, it has opened restaurants throughout the Western, Central, and Eastern United States.
MTY Food Group paid $45 million to acquire Extreme Pita’s former parent company, Extreme Brandz, from the Rechichi brothers in May 2013.
