Easy Cheese Garlic Naan Bread

This Cheese Garlic Naan Bread is an easy naan recipe without yeast (we use a combination of baking powder and baking soda instead!) which makes it much quicker to prepare and enjoy. Stuffed with cheese and infused with garlic butter – can be enjoyed as a side or as a snack on its own.

WHAT IS CHEESE GARLIC NAAN

Cheese Garlic Naan Bread is a popular Indian flatbread stuffed with gooey cheese and infused with delicious garlic butter. Traditionally cooked in a tandoor or clay oven, this version is adapted for home kitchens using a simple stovetop skillet. This cheese-stuffed nann bread pairs perfectly with your favorite curries (give it a try with my Easy Butter Chicken!) or simply enjoy on its own as a snack.

INGREDIENTS YOU’LL NEED

  • All-purpose flour: Provides the base for the dough, yielding a soft and elastic texture.
  • Granulated sugar: Adds a hint of sweetness to balance the savory flavors.
  • Natural/plain yogurt: Imparts moisture and tenderness to the dough, resulting in a light and airy naan.
  • Whole milk: Milk helps to create rich and creamy dough.
  • Mozzarella cheese: The star of the show, offering gooey, melty goodness with every bite.
  • Garlic: Garlic adds amazing flavour to this cheese naan bread.
  • Butter: Whether melted into the dough or brushed on top, butter adds richness and a golden hue to the naan.
  • Cilantro leaves and nigella seeds: These toppings add lots of amazing flavours typical for Indian cuisine.

HOW TO MAKE CHEESE-STUFFED NAAN BREAD

Please note: This is just an overview – the full ingredients and directions are in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

Step 1: Prepare the dough. In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Add the yogurt and melted butter, then gradually incorporate the warm milk until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough until smooth and elastic, then let it rest for 15 minutes.

Step 2: Stuff and shape the naan. Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and roll each into a ball. Flatten each ball into a disc and place a generous amount of shredded mozzarella cheese in the center. Fold the edges of the dough over the cheese to enclose it completely, then roll it out into a flatbread shape.

Step 3: Cook the naan. Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat and cook each stuffed Naan bread for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown spots appear.

Step 4: Prepare the garlic butter. In a small saucepan, melt the butter and add minced garlic, cooking until fragrant. Stir in chopped coriander leaves.

Step 5: Serve and enjoy. Brush the cooked naan bread with the garlic butter mixture and optionally sprinkle with nigella seeds. Serve these Cheese Garlic Naan hot and enjoy! Try them with my Easy Butter Chicken!

STORING AND FREEZING

If you happen to have leftovers of this cheese-stuffed naan bread (though it’s unlikely!), store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. To freeze, wrap the naan bread tightly in plastic wrap (without garlic butter) and place it in a freezer bag for up to 1 month. Simply thaw and reheat in a skillet or oven before serving.

TOP TIPS

  • Don’t skip the resting time for the dough—it allows the gluten to relax, resulting in a softer naan.
  • Adjust the amount of cheese and garlic according to your preference.
  • For an authentic touch, cook the naan in a cast-iron skillet or Indian tawa.

FAQ

Can I use whole wheat flour instead of all-purpose flour?

While you can substitute whole wheat flour, keep in mind that it will yield a denser texture compared to all-purpose flour.

Can I omit the cheese for a plain garlic naan?

Absolutely! Feel free to customize the recipe to suit your taste preferences. Simply skip the cheese filling and proceed with the rest of the recipe as directed

INGREDIENTS

  • FOR NAAN:
  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose/plain flour

  • 2 tsp granulated sugar

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp baking powder

  • 1/4 tsp baking soda

  • 1/2 (120g) natural/plain yogurt

  • 1/4 (60ml) warm milk

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted

  • FOR CHEESE FILLING:
  • 1 cup (115g) mozzarella cheese, shredded (or more as needed)

  • FOR GARLIC BUTTER:
  • 4 tbsp melted butter

  • 4 garlic cloves

  • Handful coriander / cilantro leaves, finely chopped

  • Nigella seeds, optional

DIRECTIONS

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Mix well to ensure even distribution of ingredients.
  • Add the natural/plain yogurt and melted butter to the dry ingredients. Mix until the dough starts to come together.
  • Slowly add the warm milk, a little at a time, while mixing until a soft dough forms.
  • Once the dough has formed, knead it on a lightly floured surface for about 2-3 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  • Place back in a bowl and brush with additional melted butter or oil. Cover with a kitchen towel and let it rest for 15 minutes.
  • Divide the dough into 8 equal portions, then roll each portion into a ball.
  • Flatten each ball into a disc with a rolling pin or your hands. Place grated cheese in the center of each disc (about 1 tablespoon each). Fold the edges of the dough over the cheese to enclose it completely, then gently roll it out into a flatbread shape.
  • Heat a non-stick skillet or frying pan over medium heat. Place one stuffed naan bread in the pan and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown spots appear.
  • While cooking the naan bread, prepare the garlic butter by melting the butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant then add chopped cilantro. Set aside.
  • Once the naan bread is cooked, brush it generously with the garlic butter mixture. Optionally, sprinkle with nigella seeds for extra flavor.
  • Repeat the process with the remaining portions of dough and cheese.
  • Serve the cheese-stuffed garlic naan bread hot with your favorite dip, dhal or curry (like my Easy Butter Chicken). Enjoy!
