Patriotic Jello Cups

The Fourth of July is such a heartwarming time, isn’t it? It’s when we get to enjoy fireworks painting the night sky, join lively parades, indulge in cheerful picnics, and savor delicious barbecues. It’s a special day that nestles itself deep in our hearts, reminding us of our precious American independence. Amidst all the exciting commotion and the colorful celebrations, there’s one thing that always shines through – the food! Those mouth-watering, vibrant, and festive dishes that delight both the young ones and the grown-ups alike.

For this coming Independence Day, I have a delightful little recipe to share with you – our Patriotic Jello Cups! These little wonders are as fun as they are tasty, and they truly capture the spirit of the 4th of July. With layers of red, white, and blue, these cups will bring smiles all around at your family barbecue or picnic. What a festive way to celebrate our cherished day!

Ingredients

  • 1 package (3oz) Berry Blue Jello
  • 1 package (3oz) Strawberry or Cherry Jello
  • 1 package (1oz) Unflavored Gelatin
  • 1 can (14oz) Sweetened Condensed Milk
  • Water
  • Clear plastic cups

Directions

  1. Begin with the blue layer. Follow the instructions on the package, usually mixing the Berry Blue Jello powder with one cup of boiling water until dissolved, then add one cup of cold water. Pour this mixture into the clear plastic cups, filling only a third of each cup. Put the cups in the refrigerator to set, which takes about 1-2 hours.
  2. While the blue layer is setting, prepare the white layer. Mix the unflavored gelatin with one cup of boiling water until dissolved. Stir in the sweetened condensed milk until well mixed. Allow this mixture to cool to room temperature before pouring it over the set blue layer. Return the cups to the refrigerator and let them set for another 1-2 hours.
  3. Finally, prepare the red layer. Similar to the blue layer, mix the Strawberry or Cherry Jello powder with one cup of boiling water until dissolved, then add one cup of cold water. Once the mixture has cooled to room temperature, pour it over the set white layer. Return the cups to the refrigerator for a final setting period.
  4. Serve chilled. For a decorative touch, add a dollop of whipped cream and a fresh blueberry or strawberry on top.

Fun Ideas

There are many ways to make these Patriotic Jello Cups even more fun for your family.

  • Fruity Fun: Add fruit pieces into each layer as it sets. Consider blueberries for the blue layer, banana slices for the white layer, and diced strawberries for the red layer.
  • Jello Shapes: Use star-shaped molds for the Jello. You can layer the colors in the mold or make individual red, white, and blue stars.
  • Dairy-Free Version: For a dairy-free white layer, use coconut milk with the unflavored gelatin instead of sweetened condensed milk. Add sugar to taste.
  • Popsicle Variation: To make the recipe a little different, pour the layers into popsicle molds instead of cups. Each layer will need to be fully set before adding the next. Kids love this variation!

The Fourth of July is a day of unity, pride, and joyous celebration. What better way to express this than through the shared love of food, and especially a dessert that pays homage to the colors of our flag. The Patriotic Jello Cups recipe is perfect for children to help with, creating not only a delicious dessert but also cherished memories.

Having food on the 4th of July is a practice that brings families together, makes memories that last, and honors the colors of our country. The Patriotic Jello Cups are a simple, fun, and adaptable treat that can be changed to fit the tastes of your family.
