The lovely coastal suburb to the southeast of Fujian, China, known as the City of Putian, is the inspiration for the name Putien. As a coastal city, Putian is famous for its Putian or Henghwa cuisine, a type of Fujianese cooking that makes extensive use of the abundant fresh seafood found there. Putien History
In the year 2000, Uncle Fong and his family made the journey from China to Singapore. The food of Putian, his hometown, started to beckon to him. Nonetheless, he failed to locate a respectable restaurant that offered Fujian food. Uncle Fong founded PUTIEN with the goal of becoming the world’s preeminent operator of Chinese restaurants after he was disappointed with the quality of the restaurants serving Putian cuisine. Uncle Fong established the initial location in 2000 on Kitchener Road in Singapore as a tribute to his hometown, Putian.
Uncle Fong would make it a nightly ritual to visit the Jurong Seafood Wholesale Market in search of the freshest, highest-quality seafood. The proverbial “early bird catches the worm” is relevant here. Being an early riser would allow him to procure high-quality, freshly caught seafood, he reasoned.
The moniker of “Well-loved restaurant owner” was bestowed upon Uncle Fong by the wholesale seafood market suppliers due to his unwavering commitment to using only the freshest, highest-quality items. Thanks to Uncle Fong’s steadfast dedication to “Quality Ingredients, Original Taste,” PUTIEN group has become a dominant restaurant brand in the region and won multiple honours in the past 19 years.
