Blackbird History
The first commercial airport in the country was located in Nielson Tower. British-born New Zealander Laurie Reuben Nielson, who emigrated to Manila in the 1930s, constructed it. Aviation enthusiast Nielson advocated constructing an airport to facilitate commerce and tourism and better link the Philippines to the rest of the world. He leased 42 acres of Ayala & Cia.’s Hacienda San Pedro de Makati and used the land to construct the largest and most modern airport in Asia at the time.
The terminal building and control tower at Nielson Airport was built to look like an aeroplane from above, and the airport first opened in July 1937. The runways used to be located on Ayala Avenue and Paseo de Roxas. The first flight of Philippine Air Lines Inc. took off from Nielson Airport in 1941, carrying nine passengers to Baguio in a Beechcraft Model 18.
After America entered World War II, the Far East Air Force moved its headquarters to Nielson Airport. During their occupation, the Japanese utilized the airport and field they had blasted in December 1941 as their air headquarters. After being kidnapped by the Japanese and transferred to Hong Kong for imprisonment, Laurie Nielson was never heard from again.
The airport was severely damaged during the war, but Philippine Air Lines swiftly modernized and reopened it as the country’s primary airport for air travellers after the liberation. Manila International Air Terminal Inc. oversaw airport operations.
On July 31, 1946, a chartered Douglas DC 4 flew forty American service members from Nielson Airport to Oakland, California, via Guam, Wake Island, Johnston Atoll, and Honolulu, making PAL the first Asian airline to traverse the Pacific Ocean.
When Philippine Airlines (PAL) moved to its current location in Pasay City in 1948, airport operations halted, and the land was transferred to Ayala and Cia. Many airport buildings were demolished, and the runways were repurposed as highways, all to make room for expanding the Makati financial and commercial hub. Nielson Tower was formerly the airport’s control tower and passenger terminal. They are the only buildings in Makati that were constructed before the war.
Blackbird, a dining and entertainment complex, has taken up residence in the Nielson Tower, transforming the former check-in area, passenger terminal, control tower, and tarmac area into a bar and lounge, oval grill room, and private room, respectively. The site has been renovated extensively while retaining its classic Art Deco style.
