EQUIPMENT

SPORTY SPIDER CAKE METHOD:

Color 500g ( 11b ) of Sugar Paste green and 75g ( 2 oz ) yellow. Roll out the green sugar paste and cover the cake board, trimming excess from around the edge. Thinly roll out the yellow sugar paste and cut two strips. Stick the strips onto the cake board with sugar glue, then put the board aside to dry. Trim the crust from the cake, keeping the rounded top where the cake has risen.

Turn the cake upside down and spread a layer of buttercream over the surface to help the sugar paste stick. Color 315g ( 10oz ) of sugar paste black, thinly roll it out, and cover the cake completely, smoothing around the shape and tucking the excess underneath. Pres a length of licorice into the surface to indent the spider's smile.

Color the royal icing black. Spread the royal icing over the surface of the cake. covering a little at a time, and stipple by patting with the flat of a knife. Spread a little more royal icing on the top of the cake to create higher peaks

Bend lengths of licorice and push them into the cake to create the spider's legs. Stipple some more royal icing around the top of the legs to hold them in  place. Model white sugar paste oval shapes for the running shoes and stick the ends of the licorice into each shoe using sugar glue. Flatten two large white oval shapes for the eyes. Model two flattened circles for the pupils using the black trimmings. Color the remaining sugar paste red and blue. Thinly roll out and cut tiny strips for the running shoes, sticking them in place with sugar glue.
