Dieser Kentucky Straight Bourbon ist Mitglied der Small Batch Bourbon Collection von Jim Beam, zu der neben dem Baker's und Basil Hayden's auch der Booker's gehört, den ich schon als Flasche mein eigen nennen konnte. Knob Creek ist die erfolgreichste Abfüllung dieser Serie. Von 2016 bis 2020 kam er ohne Altersangaben auf den Markt, Jim Beam konnte zu dieser Zeit nicht garantieren, dass wirklich die Lagerzeit von 9 Jahren erreicht werden konnte. Seit 2020 ist die NAS-Version wieder vom Markt verschwunden und die 9 Jahre Alterskennzeichnis steht wieder auf den Flaschen.

Verwendet wird für den Knob Creek die selbe Mash Bill wie beim Baker's und Booker's mit 75% Mais, 13% Roggen, 12% gemälzter Gerste. Die Reifung erfolgt in ausgekohlten amerikanischen Weißeichenfässern und abgefüllt wird mit 100 amerikanischen Proof - also 50% ABV.

Aussehen
Dunkles Bernstein oder auch sattes Bronze.

Nase
Der bei Bourbons häufig auftretende Geruch nach frisch geöffneter Maisdose ist hier nur dezent beim ersten Reinschnuppern zugegen und verflüchtigt sich rasch. Dafür tritt eine nette Kombination aus aromatischer Eichenwürze und Kirscheukalyptusbonbons in den Vordergrund. Hinzu gesellen sich Aromen vom Mark frisch aufgeschnittenen Bourbon Vanillestangen und etwas dunkel gewordenes Karamell. Die 50% sind sehr gut eingebunden, den Alkohol spürt man kaum im Geruch. Die Nase ist gut ausbalanciert. Die Aromen werden im richtigen Maße nach vorne geschoben, nicht zu viel aber auch nicht zu wenig.
Mit ein, zwei Tropfen Wasser wird er leichter, sogar fruchtiger und weicher. Die Würzigkeit nimmt ab. 

Geschmack
Schön süß, mit viel Karamell und Vanille gleitet der Bourbon weich in den Mundraum. Die Aromen von Kirschenbonbons mit dem Eukalyptusanteil folgt der Süße auf dem Fuße. Danach übernimmt die Würzigkeit der Eichenfässer und auch der Roggen meldet sich stärker zu Wort. Der Alkohol ist auch im Mund kein Problem. Im Gegenteil, beim Geschmack hätten zwei, drei Prozente vielleicht sogar ganz gut getan.
Mit ein paar wenigen Tropfen Wasser wird es vanilliger, die Süße bleibt länger präsent und die Würze reduziert sich, leider auch die Kirsche und die Minze vom Roggen.

Abgang
Die würzigen Eichenaromen bleiben noch länger am Gaumen kleben, zusammen mit einer netten undefinierbaren Fruchtbasis, einer leichten Süße und dem Anflug von Minze, der vom Roggenbestandteil des Mash Bills stammen könnte.

Fazit
Der Knob Creek 9y ist sicherlich der „Einsteiger“ Bourbon in die Small Batch Collection von Jim Beam, wenn man noch nicht so viel Erfahrung mit höher prozentigen Bourbons, wie dem Booker’s, hatte.
Die Nase ist sehr gefällig, vor allem die Kirscharomen mit der leichten Pfefferminze und der Eichenwürze gefallen. Insgesamt ist die Würzigkeit der Eichenfässer hier nicht so konzentriert und intensiv, wie beispielsweise beim Booker’s oder dem Rare Breed von Wild Turkey.
Im Geschmack bekommt man das geliefert, was der Geruch andeutet. In einer schönen Balance. Ein wenig mehr Bumms hätte mir da vielleicht gefallen. Mit Wasser wird er fast unverschämt süffig. Insgesamt ein sehr ansprechender Bourbon, der für einen gemütlichen Sipper am Abend perfekt ist. Und für seinen aktuellen Preis von knapp € 30,- ist er ein PLV-Tipp!

This Kentucky Straight Bourbon is a member of Jim Beam's Small Batch Bourbon Collection, which includes Baker's and Basil Hayden's as well as Booker's, which I already had the pleasure of calling my own in a bottle. Knob Creek is the most successful bottling of this series. From 2016 to 2020 it came on the market without any age statement, Jim Beam could not guarantee at that time that really the storage time of 9 years could be reached. Since 2020, the NAS version has disappeared from the market and the 9-year age label is again on the bottles.

Knob Creek uses the same mash bill as Baker's and Booker's with 75% corn, 13% rye, 12% malted barley. Maturation is in charred American white oak casks and bottled at 100 American proof - so 50% ABV.

Appearance
Dark amber or even rich bronze.

Nose
The smell of freshly opened corn cans that is often found in bourbons is only subtly present here at first sniffing and quickly dissipates. Instead, a nice combination of aromatic oak spice and cherry eucalyptus candy comes to the fore. Aromas of freshly cut bourbon vanilla sticks and a little darkened caramel join in. The 50% is very well integrated, the alcohol is hardly noticeable in the aroma. The nose is well balanced. The flavours are pushed forward in the right measure, not too much but also not too little.
With a drop or two of water, it becomes lighter, even fruitier and softer. The spiciness decreases. 

Taste
Nice and sweet, with lots of caramel and vanilla, the bourbon glides smoothly into the mouth. The flavours of cherry candy with the eucalyptus part follows on the heels of the sweetness. Then the spiciness of the oak barrels takes over and the rye also makes its presence felt more strongly. The alcohol is not a problem in the mouth either. On the contrary, two or three percent would have been good for the taste.
With a few drops of water, it becomes more vanilla, the sweetness remains present longer and the spiciness reduces, unfortunately also the cherry and the mint from the rye.

Finish
The spicy oak flavours stick to the palate even longer, along with a nice indefinable fruit base, a slight sweetness and the hint of mint that could be from the rye component of the Mash Bill.

Conclusion
The Knob Creek 9y is certainly the "starter" bourbon in Jim Beam's Small Batch Collection, if you haven't had much experience with higher percentage bourbons, like Booker's.
The nose is very pleasing, especially the cherry aromas with the light peppermint and oak spiciness. Overall, the spiciness of the oak barrels here is not as concentrated and intense as, for example, Booker's or Wild Turkey's Rare Breed.
On the palate, you get what the smell suggests. In a nice balance. I might have liked a little more punch. With water, it becomes almost outrageously drinkable. All in all, a very appealing bourbon that is perfect for a cosy sipper in the evening. And for its current price of just under € 30,-, it is a PLV tip!
